Curler's Gold Autumn Classic

Now in playoff time with 2 notable teams missing in action.

1. Rachel Homan 2. Kerri Einarson
. . . pretty much the Top 2 Canadian teams, finalists in last 2 Tournament of Hearts!

The unpredictable trajectory of Jennifer Jones continued yesterday. Approaching age 48 Jones showed every wart, poor decisions, skidding out of control, odd strategy vs. Unji Kim. Jones worked hard to be up 2 coming home without hammer and looked to have Kim hooped by skips rocks. However, a great raise takeout by Kim on her first left Jones a peel-out of Kim's rock in the 4 foot. True to form, Jones skidded out wide and barely made contact with the shot stone - able to move it out of the house but in doing so she also crashed her shot stone and her 2nd stone in the back 12. After the dust cleared Kim had an open hit for a 3-spot to relegate Jones to the 'C' event where she would face her most feared nemesis, the Ottawa Shot-Pelters led by Rachel Homan.
Then - Surprise! Surprise! Jones machines off Homan in only 7 ends to stagger into the playoffs. Jennifer Jones is like a box of chocolates now - you never know what you're gonna get when Jones hits the ice. Great players at lead, 2nd & 3rd but a wildly inconsistent & declining skip who continues to defy the form chart.

Meanwhile - Einarson was erased in her C qualifier by Tracy Fleury . . . in an unexpected low-scoring tilt - 3-2 win for Ms. Fleury.

We all know there is trouble in the Jones camp but the bigger questions:

1. What the heck is wrong with Rachel Homan. Can't remember the last time a Homan team got bounced before playoffs, losing 3 games in the process.

2. Same for Einarson. Perhaps her team isn't yet in form yet. Maybe they're only focused on the Olympic Trials - like Ms. Homan.
Who knows?

Well, it’s common knowledge that the top teams play to peak for big events. Or maybe just a bad weekend for both teams. Note the high number of international teams in the playoffs & not many Canadian teams…

Five of the eight teams in the playoffs are international teams. Strong field for an early October 'spiel. Team Fleury is off to a good start this season & likely to be the best Canadian hope for a win this week.

Once these international teams realized they could serve as roadblocks to success for Canadian teams - not just fodder to be overrun they started putting down our best teams . . . . much the same as they usually do at worlds or last Olympics!

Tabby Peterson vs. Princess Eve was 1 quarterfinal w/ Peterson advancing to semis.

Jones staying close w/ Chels Carey, only down 2 coming home with last brick. One Manitoba team guaranteed to advance to semis.

A red-hot Jamie Sinclair machined off Unchi Gim to advance while Tracy Fleury team continued to display advanced inconsistency in getting put down by Japan's A-team lead by Satsuki Fujisawa.

That was old fashioned @$$ kicking by Peterson.

Guess putting one over on JJ Jones didn't help Chels Carey much, eh?

Haven't heard of a quit after 2 ends in quite some time!

I've spoken (prolly too much) about Jones' wobbly decline.

Can't see JJ as any more than the 6th to 9th seed at Olympic Trials. (she'll actually be seeded 4th or 5th, more a reputational seed)

However, Jones must be lickin' her chops when she sees her primary competitors - Homan, Einarson, Scheidegger stagger around even more than her.

Either Homan or Einarson will be seeded #1 but they are both far from cresting for the trials. You can understand Homan a bit - she was absolutely rocked by those 2 consecutive losses to Einarson for the Cdn. title - also moving Courtney down to lead and bringing in a solid 3rd to play 2nd. . . . .just for a bit more horsepower in the brush department.

Einarson was exposed by a decent world field as a bit overrated. .. . despite her powerhouse front end. Kerri, unlike Rachel just doesn't make enough shots throughout the course of a hard game. She continues to fail picking up bonus points and too often rolls out when a nose is needed.

Walker & Scheidegger have been poised to pick up the pieces but neither has shown much, albeit a short burst by Walker at season's start.

That leaves Corryn Brown & Jones. Brown is still relatively young but could make inroads if others continue to fail. Jones is like a hungry wolf at a sheep's convention. She obviously senses how Einarson & Homan have dipped PLUS she doesn't seem to be afraid of the other teams for various reasons.

One other team usually a picture of consistency even though its rarely spectacular - Team Tracy Fleury. That team, based only on consistency under pressure could be the major dark horse at this year's trials.

But for now - the Old Wolf continues to plan traps to lure the lambs to slaughter!

Doesn't matter where she is seeded, Jones will be in the final and I would not be surprised if she wins it.
This is the 1 event she has been focused on for some time, it's her last roundup and she knows if she wins another Olympic medal that that would make her the GOAT.
Jones has not had her A game on display for years, at the trials she will.

Jones used to set traps for her prey . . . using an exquisite combination of a massive junk game combined with her iron will in making shots that matter.
These days, her junk game is usually what gets JJ beaten.

Most top Canadian teams have caught up with what Jones plays - and tend to use it against her!

She can win the trials if she returns to the form that secured her last Olympic appearance - but I still maintain she's a longshot, who's best hopes rest on other teams crashing or veering off form.

Well some events have a minimum of ends. Guess the organizers of AG didn't care about people who pay lots of $ to watch the semis.

Off topic but I find it hilarious that one of the pop up ads on this site is for a service that blocks pop up ads.

When you think about it its a brilliant marketing strategy. Goes somewhat against the grain but I'm sure if you punched up the blocking service you'd get an elaborate site/service which actually does most of what they say they do - ie. BLOCK ADS

For a FEE . . . ! ! !
On your credit card.
Monthly. Semi-Annually. Yearly!

Any reason given for stopping the game after two ends? Injury? Seems very odd.

Here's the link to the livestream. Peterson stole 3 more in the third, making the score 9-0 after three ends. I think Carey had just had enough at that point...

Well, that’s unfortunate if they just up and quit. No idea of the turnout but people did have to buy tickets to get in.

Much less about us the few watching online , but more about the sponsors who paid big bucks to try and bring both viewers to watch and buyers of their products. However, at least have someone post the scores and update the points for ALL.

There was another game when Carey conceded after 3 ends, and they did switch to that game. So they ended up showing more sponsors on stream, because they showed (partially) 2 games instead of 1 (i.e. 4 teams instead of 2).

You can almost argue that Carey did the right thing by "sharing the love" for sponsors, letting the other teams have the spotlight once she's had enough and no longer believed she could realistically win the game.

Also, and I could be wrong here, but I thought I saw somewhere that Carey helped organize this event. She wasn't just a participant on the ice, rather she also did some things behind the curtains. If this is true and that she did put extra blood sweat and tears into this event, I'm pretty sure she didn't quit just out of spite.
