Modified 4 Rock FGZ

Look, with all this talk about shortening the game to 8 ends and the addition of the game-lengthening 5 rock rule I think we've been going about this all wrong.

While I understand clearly the arguments in favor of the 5 rock rule, I think now, having played it in club and at a competitive level, it was a mistake.

Why? because if anything, it's slowed the game down again. C'mon, how many times have you watched club games now get dragged out with potentially 5 stones before a single hit can be played. And I've watched teams successfully execute 3 Ticks perfectly on multiple occasions.

So let's face it, the 5FGZ rule is a failure. Primarily because the Tick hasn't been nullified. You can't make the shot illegal because the Tick is just a narrow, somewhat heavy draw shot. So what's my answer?

Make the Tick more difficult.

We already have a centre line running end to end on every sheet. And does anyone play in a club where there aren't edge of four foot lines doing the same?

Where am I going with this? Simple. You reduce the area of allowable movement for a guard by using those 4-foot edge lines and go back to the 4 rock FGZ but modified to make the Tick extremely difficult and reduce its effectiveness.

In short, any stone in front of the house and within the 4 foot edge lines-in whole or in part-can be moved but not removed from that 4 foot path. This would include raising a stone into the rings if it went outside the 4 foot path.

Now think on this. Ticking a stone off the centre to within an inch of the boards, or until its barely an effective corner guard, is tough enough. But imagine that now you can only move it less than 4 feet. Sure that's doable but incredibly difficult and doing so still leaves a portion of the 4 foot covered with the very likely possibility of the shooter sticking around as well (if you pull back even more on the weight for the Tick).

So, viola! Tick shot effectiveness reduced and almost nullified.

Did anyone suggest this or try it as an alternative? curious as to the response/results if so.

I know of a ton of curling clubs that do not have 4 foot lines running down the ice - ice makers HATE them as they get complaints like "there's a fall on sheet 3 near the 4 foot line..."

That fall you mention is usually the result of bad scraping (overlapping scrape lines) or unsanded, straight rocks. The lines have nothing to do with the ice falling-but they are an excellent way to locate where the fall is, so it's understandable why poor icemen dislike them, lol.

But that's not the point of the thread.

OK, you asked if anyone plays in a curling club without 4 foot lines running the length of the sheet and yes I do. In fact, when I play in a city-wide Spiel in Ottawa Canada every year, most clubs do not have those 4 foot lines. If you simply Google "ottawa curling club" and click to return images, you'll see what I mean... No 4 foot lines at Ottawa (home club of Rachel Homan), Rideau, Granite, RCMP, etc.
