Qualico Mixed Doubles

Watching the live stream of this spiel. One camera direction seems to be a mirror image. Shots that start out inturn become outturn. Scoreboard is reversed. Is this just me?

Saw quite a bit of the Jones/Laing vs Homan/Morris semi. Even though Homan/Morris ended up slaughtering Jones/Laing in 6 ends (handshakes in 7 as JJ tried to stubborn it out) I was totally impressed by a couple of early shots by Jen Jones. She drew the dimple with zero backing to avoid barfing up a steal of 2 (or 3) and carved in a wedge shot the next end to nullify Homan.
In the end - Johnny Mo brutalized Brent Laing like Laing has never been brutalized before. Homan is still business-like and a killer on the ice - and in a game where nuances are required vs. heavyweight takeouts she seems to have adjusted accordingly. She had a bit more problem with Joss Peterman in the event final - obviously Joss's partner, Brett Gallant able to stand up to Johnny Mo to a certain extent while Joss is slightly better than Jones on basic & simple shots.
Jones would normally miss those dimple draws by 5 to 10 feet in regular 4 x 4 curling. Makes one think that mixed doubles might be JJ's best route into another Olympics. Just too many missed shots & rock placement gaffes in 4 x 4 for her to compete effectively.

Qualico Mixed Doubles

I am just watching a replay of the final between Peterman/Gallant and Homan/Morris. Every time I watch Morris play mixed doubles I ask myself “Who would curl with this guy?”
Rachel: tell me the weight.
John: OK, I will
(Rock thrown)
Rachel: Where is it?
John: Well,um.....(40 feet of rock travel go by....)
It just rubs rock top 4
John: Heaving sighs,...
Rachel: I can’t call line and call weight too.
REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT
John never wants to sweep his teammate’s shots, but always wants them to sweep his. Incessant babble but no communication. Rachel chooses ice for her own shot, John talks for 5 minutes about why he thinks her ice should be different. Good Jesus. Painful to watch. And it is equally painful no matter who he’s playing with.

The best curling commentary I have ever heard was from Chelsea Carey, Colin Hodgins and Darren Moulding during this event.

As everyone knows I'm not the biggest Chelsea Carey fan out there.
But her commentary along w/ Colin Hodgson was absolutely spectacular.
If she can't get into the trials she should really apply for Joan or Cheryl's jobs at Sportsnet & TSN - she's that good.

Moulding was like an old rock 'n roll DJ doing curling. Very refreshing but without a color person he was a tiny bit wobbly. That said, I liked him!

Probably why any mixed doubles team he plays on only lasts 1 year.
Now he has Homan who is probably pressured into playing with him.
You can sure tell when a female is talking to him it goes in one ear and out the other

Rachel is his usual Mixed Doubles partner; Kaitlyn filled in for Homan during the Oly as she wasn't allowed to do both disciples in the Oly under CC.

Yes, John talks a lot, but still manages to get the Ws. Both Rach and John have known each other for a long, long, long time.

Homan/Morris lost the 2017 Canadian championship to Courtney/Carruthers, who got silver at World.

You can also find news articles of Homan/Morris winning bonspiels as far back as 2016.

Exactly. Anyone curling with Johnny Mo knows what they are getting. He has his "quirks" and Rachel Homan is not going to curl with someone she can't deal with. Also he is a heck of a shotmaker still.

The Homan - Morris combo is very strong regardless of their quirks (more John than Raytch btw)
You have one of the finest repeat shot-makers in the business in Johnny Mo, combined with the presumed strongest female skip (shot-wise) in the history of the game - sorry Sandra Schmirler but Raytch's percentages are higher than yours despite your amazing run.

Even with Jennifer Jones drawing the dimple and carving taps to the pot - Morris & Homan dissected Jones/Laing like they've never been dissected before. Did near the same to Gallant/Peterman.

Once they get into deeper water against the better Euro teams they'll experience far more trauma than they did vs. some very good Canadian team.

For the record, Raytch is getting some amazing curling strategy and outcome thoughts out loud and in public when playing with Johnny Mo. He seldom holds back. If Raytch absorbs even 1/2 of what John strategizes about she'll be even more formidable in regular womens 4 x 4.

Best curling commentary ever....

I wouldn't quite go that far but Carey is , in my opinion, far superior to either Joan or Cheryl. Let's hope somebody at TSN/SN was listening also.

Agreed.

And slightly off topic but I'm enjoying Pete Stetski's commentary on Team Koe's "Kootube" on FB. Much more so than Russ Howard's. There's a more personal touch in that he actually knows the boys on a personal level.
