Womens Worlds Prince George

Here's hoping this runs cleanly during these turbulent times. Teams less likely to make playoffs include Italy (if they got out), Czech Republic, Germany and Denmark. So I'll be rooting for them to get a few critical wins. Korea, China and Japan are all there, from the Pacific Rim - assuming they are cleared to attend. I will be hoping for Canada but feel that USA has strong momentum with Peterson finally getting her chance at the helm. Swe Sco Rus Sui - does that round it out? Some strong teams. If anyone finds CurlIT covering games - let know, eh.

We really are lucky this is going on. Sports are calling e eryth8ng off everywhere you look. Euros might be suspended to next year, tennis is likely shutting down for 5 weeks and canada has already lost tje womens worlds and figure skating worlds. Women's workdays may be a go but mens and mixed doubles and seniors....who knows.

Your kidding right? People are dying from a virus. The govt is recommending social distance and the WCF and CC are asking people to sit elbow to elbow in a province that is already a hot bed for the virus. You think that the Chinese team will not have supporters who have been in China within the last 2 weeks?
At least some pro sports teams are being socially responsible. Good on them. Bad on Curling Canada.

I mean lucky in the sense that this hasnt hen cancelled yet. Obviously what's going on is terrible and I only want everyone to be safe.

I was honestly expecting it to he cancelled. O think what works in curlingz favor is that all these teams have been in Canada for weeks so theres no danger associated with them.

As far as the chinese supporters I would hope canada would do everything they can to ensure safety. Even if that means banning certain countries supporters from entering. Or playing with no audience

the selfish part of me does want it to continue . this is one of only 3 chances i have to watch womens curling at the highest level all year.

that being said it probably should be. i dont know why it hasnt been when the figure skating and womens hockey world championships have been and they're both in canada. either officials in BC are saying something completely different than the ones in nova scotia and quebec or this simply comes down to gross neglegance on behalf of the world curling federation.

I am also surprised that it hasn't been cancelled or made to be played in an empty arena as some other sporting events are doing.

Certainly the event ticks a lot of the boxes that identify a high risk.
- older demographic among the spectators
- no separation in the stands
- virtually no screening; self-identification of sick people.

On the other hand Prince George is not a Corona hotbed; there are no identified cases anywhere close.

My sense is that it's all about the money. We paid $700+ for a pair of good tix for the week, and we're going but would be just as happy to get our money back. Could still happen as events unfold.

If you used a credit card to buy the tickets, check the fine print for cancelling the tickets, similar to cancelling airline tickets. Different companies have different fine print but might be worth looking unto.

I sent an email to Katherine Henderson asking if they are refunding tickets. An auto reply came back that she is "on vacation " this week. Too weird and that questions should be directed to Bill Merklinger. Bill hasn't seen fit to reply yet.

i guess the other things to consider is that curling probably cant afford to take the financial hit from not hosting an event like a lot of other sports could. you'd hate to think that this is a reason why the event hasnt been cancelled and that they would view safety as more important than making money but its possible.

if not cancelled i'd at least expect to hear about precautions being taken but we havent. its weird. its almost like thy're pretending nothings going on

yeah but to my knowledge the womens world hockey championship wasnt going anywhere near a hotbed for the virus either yet was cancelled. has nova scotia even reported a case?

You need to check out the local newspaper as there were stories about it the past couple of days. Yesterday the chief medical officer for BC said that they (through the Northern Health authority) have been working with the organizers to limit the risk.

NBA just suspended their season. Even after they planned on playing in empty arenas. Curling Canada..... Hmmmm. Red coats be damned.

Women's hockey CANCELLED in Halifax a week ago.

One life is not worth the price of admission for curling.

there's still the chance its cancelled. obviously i hope not but i do find it funny that nova scotia and quebec officials obviously found it to risky to holst a world championship but BC officials didnt. again, maybe the fact that the teams were here already works in their favor and thats why

hopefully they dont pull an indian wells

The athletes are not at risk as much as the spectators, many of whom are much older than the athletes. With the NBA pulling the plug on the season and the NHL announcing "something" Thursday, there will be pressure on the curling group to re-consider. The articles from the Prince George Citizen linked above were full of platitudes and reassurances but little information.
A responsible organization would look past the money and cancel.

I hope not. We just bought tickets although only for one day and will stay in PG overnight. Risk seems quite remote.

I see three worries with sporting events and COVID-19 spread. One is transmission among the participants in the event itself, another is transmission among the audience members, and the third is the combination of the first two.

As far as the Women's Worlds goes, it looks as though the athletes themselves have already solved that first one by their pseudo-quarantines, already remarked on upthread.

The second and third can be solved if the fans are told to stay home and watch it on TV or Youtube. The competition could go forward without them, albeit at a likely financial loss.

The reason the NBA has suspended their season is they were getting likely player-to-player transmission. That seems far less likely in the case of this weekend's upcoming curling event.

Now as for the men's event in Scotland in a few weeks, I don't know. Those last two Slams are probably in danger as well.

yep. really did feel it was only a matter of time. and lets be honest. the mens world, mixed doubles and seniors will soon follow. grand slams will likely also be called off

the question is what will they do. will the federation just give the next years championships to the venues that would have gotten them this year?

i guess if things are better by september or october they would look at maybe trying to hold it then but that would interfere with tour events. this is hard and its not the only event they have to consider

I think it would be very hard to reschedule on any short notice as venue will obviously want to book all the events they are able too and would not be in a position to cancel without problems to reputation.

yeah, you're right. but maybe, if things are settled down by, let's say june then maybe they can begin the process of having the worlds hosted in january. it would mean having 2 world championships in the same year and possibly pushing the 2021 worlds back but i dont think to many people would mind. if you could start planning in june that would give 7 months to prepare.

it would simplify things if you could get them back where they were going to be hosted this year anyway

the other option i was thinking of would be having a defered championship. so kerri would go to the worlds as canada in 2021 and the 2021 scotties winner would go in 2022 and so on. same for the brier. they do that same thing at the canadian seniors. its not ideal but it might be something to consider. i also think that countries that had national championships like scotland, switzerland and the US should consider doing the same or something similar.

in the end i realize 2020 is likely gone but if this calms down soon enoughb there might be a way to still get it played.

i dont know that to many of the athletes would mind playing a worlds at the start of the year. there's no spiels in the way to worry about and they could concievably get it done . im ust trying to think of being fair but ultimately neither solution i came up with is likely to happen

i guess olympic qualification will be the 2019 and 2021 results. its the easiest fix

im not trying to sound heartless by the way. im just gutted for all these athletes. team einarson and team mouat in particular
