Energy savings by insulating 4 sheet club- advice?

We are looking into putting siding and insulation on the rink area of our 4 sheet curling club. The cost to insulate a cement block building is significant!

There are a number of calculations to figure out the heat gain of the building but the result is an energy gain-loss which is difficult to convert to dollars saved.

Has anyone had any actual experience insulating the rink area and if so what were the results..... like energy savings $$$
Other savings??

my guess is the real savings in operating costs are if you insulate the floor. The plant is the real power consumer and isolating the freeze zone will drastically reduce costs.

My two cents. Like any free advise it is worth exactly what you paid for it!

Check into low emissivity ceilinigs. There should be some at a local hockey rink. this product is basically 2 pieces of tin foil with bubble wrap in between. In manitoba it would cost around $1.75/ft. There are significant savings in heat and lighting. There may be energy grants available as well. Good Luck

Thanks for the suggestion but we already put in a new cement floor with insulation and you are correct, it made a big difference.

With winters seeming to be getting warmer, our only issue is those hotter days with the sun beating on the walls.

Right now we have a plan and a cost....but no idea of the payback so it is hard to know if there is a payback insulating walls?

I was hoping someone had done it and had some numbers!

We installed a low-E ceiling at Utica CC some 7 years ago or so and I estimated a decrease in electric usage of about 15-18% using the electric bills and some correction for the outdoor air temperature for the season before and the season after. We have a 6-sheet club so there is a lot of heat ingress from the ceiling.

In addition, you will find your ice-makers have less trouble keeping the ice consistent. On sunny days when the ceiling is quite warm, the IR radiation from the ceiling can play hob with the ice surface conditions. The low-E ceiling reflects IR, so our ice conditions are not so dependent on daily insolation of the roof. We now only have the IR radiation issue on sheet 6, which is next to a south wall. Sheet 6 is normally 1-2 seconds faster than any other sheet in the club. On sunny days, look out for lightning ice!

The other thing you will discover is that the low-E ceiling will reduce your lighting load. We pulled out half our our fluorescent tubes after installation to keep from going blind. I think a low-E ceiling is a good investment. Payback may only be a few years.

Somewhere to start. I would do two calculations. One baselining the existing conditions and the next with your planned improvement. I like the idea outlined above with the new type ceiling.

How about using an energy calculator tool such as the one provided by the U.S. Department of Energy. This io games tool allows you to input information about the building and energy usage to estimate the potential savings from insulation.

Cracked, curling, or missing shingles can expose the underlying structure to potential damage. An uneven or sagging roof may suggest structural issues that need immediate attention. licensed Roof Contractor
