Also Gushue carried the team the first half of the week throwing at least one game saver per game in their matches against Koe, Bottcher and Jacobs. He deserved a night off.

Yes I was thinking the same about Gushue. He saved them a few times early in the week and that is what legendary skips do.

Losing Kennedy hurts, of course, but I think they can win the provincial without him, and maybe Kennedy can join mid-week, etc.

I don't think they'd be willing to lend anyone else to Gushue. Those 3 are family (brothers and a cousin).

I just picked Kennedy because there's precedent from Kennedy being shoved unto Team Bottcher as fifth at Men's earlier this year. If Curling Canada did it once, they can probably do it again.

And Kennedy himself is also a high caliber versatile curler with the right temperament.

Kennedy is prolly the most complete curler in Canada (outside Newfoundland). After Kennedy my list of complete curlers (shot-making, brushing, line & weight calling, temperament, etc.) would be:

1. Brad Jacobs
2. BJ Neufeld
3. Matt Dunstone
4. John Morris
5. Martin Crete
6. Martin Crete
7. Ryan Fry (temperament problem)
8. Scott Howard

btw - If allowed to pick players from Team Gushue, all except Walker would be in the Top 5

5x World Champion Niklas Edin, probably a GOAT soon if not already, specifically name Marc Kennedy as one curler that he highly respects. Moving from second/frontend to third/vice is, according to him, a very difficult task to pull off at elite level.

Interestingly, when Kennedy first joined Koe, he was throwing third but sweeps with Hebert. Laing throwing second was vice. So it was a 2-step transformation for Kennedy.

Did you know that Geoff Walker skipped Team Gushue once upon a time? It was only for 1 end. You should be able to guess this one if you know the history of Team Gushue.

I think it was when he slipped and smacked his head on the ice in Truro. Hospital right next to the rink. He returned later in the game.

This should finally be the year where the men’s Olympic representative also plays at the Brier. Olympics end Feb19/20. Brier starts March 4.

Gushue can either take up one of the wildcard spots (or frankly just beat up on the couple NL teams from Jan 24-30 before heading to China, though they may prefer not to waste their prep time doing that).

Anyways, no reason (unless they didn’t want to) for them not to be at the Brier this year.

Here's an alternative: if you medal at the Olympics, you get to challenge the winner of Scotties/Brier afterward.

This achieves a lot. It really provides extra incentives to shine at the Olympics, and you also have the option of winning Scotties/Brier without a full burden of playing in the entire event from start to finish.

Potential issue is that an Olympic team does not have to satisfy provincial/residency rules of Brier/Scotties, but I think Team Canada vs Team Canada should be legit regardless.

There's an article in the Globe and Mail by Cathal Kelly today (Nov 30) questioning why we are even considering sending athletes to the olympic games in China. Context is human rights abuse by the Chinese gov't, and now in light of the COVID Omicron variant which appears to be highly transmissible.

Kelly's article touches on how Jones and Gushue fail to address either of these issues in their press scrums.

The issue of attendance isn't settled yet. My sense is the federal gov't wouldn't mind boycotting the games and blaming it on COVID.

Most familiar with Cathal Kelly’s work knows he’s someone who lacks credibility or any importance so I wouldn’t put any stock into that.

Canada isn’t boycotting the Olympics. Or more succinctly, Canada is not being the first to move on that. If the USA makes that decision (they won’t), then maybe other countries follow. Everyone attended the 2008 Olympics in China and it’s not like China’s human rights record was pristine then. Or the 2014 Russia Olympics.

I don't think Jen will be as star struck at the Olympics as the Fleury team would be and will settled in better.

Not just Jones Kaitlyn has 2 Olympics under her belt.

"Canada isn't boycotting the Olympics" . Hack Weight

Todate Canada has not. But unless you know some folks on the Canadian Olympic Committee, there is no way of being certain what's going to happen because Trudeau's latest statement with respect to a possible boycott is that the Canadian government will allow the COC, which operates separately from the government, to 'make the final decision on its own'. Southside, Biden's most recent statement strongly suggests there might only be a 'diplomatic boycott'. This is ,of course, good news for the US athletes because a diplomatic boycott would have no adverse impact whatsoever.
