1. Hopefully everyone in the broadcast crew is okay. That’s obviously most important. Not much of a bubble if 7+ people get Covid, but I realize curling isn’t working with an NHL or NBA budget to set it up.

2. Have to get someone streaming the games. Make the best of a bad situation. You don’t need announcers. Surely you can give a couple people some video camera (or literally an iPhone at worst), plant them halfway up the stands far away from anyone, and you’ll get a few thousand viewers on YouTube.

3. I don’t put much into the “they’ve played too much” narrative. They were great the past two weeks. They didn’t just go from winning a slam, having multiple days off, to “we are too tired to perform”. Undoubtedly there’s mental health strain being away from family and friends for so long, but these are world class athletes and being physically tired is not the reason they haven’t played well. It’s okay to say “we didn’t play well this week, we are disappointed but will try use this to get better.”

4. They have to win 6 in a row. Seems unlikely, though they’ll be 3-5 going into that Scotland game (which would be great to watch, but alas).

5. The “qualify for the Olympics” narrative is annoying. Canada will be in the Olympics. If someone has to play an extra bonspiel next fall to qualify, then whatever. And the “who would play it” question is hilarious. Do we think the team that wins the trials is going to be like “wow we achieved a dream and qualified for the Olympics but absolutely we’ll sit on our couches and watch another team who won’t be going to the Olympics try qualify for us.”

The WCF do seem to have staff videoing key shots/last stones from the stands and next to the players on the ice which they are posting on twitter immediately. Perhaps that could be expanded?

Interesting set of results in tonight's games as Germany, the US and China all lost. Looks like RCF, Sweden and Switzerland are certain to make the play offs so that in my view leaves those three teams plus Scotland and possibly Canada and Japan chasing the final 3 places.

So a good set of results for Scotland and Canada - who play each other tomorrow night.

Canada however currently rank 11th out of 14 teams!

Cumulative LSD scores

I still have a glimmer of hope that a tie at 7-6 with one or two teams will give Canada a chance at the playoffs. I see each game has the total score but can't find the running total to see where Canada stands vs say Scotland, China and US who they may end up tied with. Again, wishful thinking.

Does anyone have a link?

Thanks. It was listed under reports and I didn't see it. Canada is 3rd best right now ahead of any team they may have a chance to be tied with.

"Suggesting that Gushue would pick Homan is just wishful thinking"... curlingclips

Perhaps, but by picking either Courtney or Homan, Gushue would practically ensure Canada wins the world championship.

Danger again of assuming Canada will beat all comers!

I expect Bruce Mouat and Oskar Erikkson and their partners plus the other mixed doubles specialists like the Swiss pair might of course have something to say about that in Aberdeen!

For example Mouat and his partner Jen Dodds defeated Kevin Koe and Rachel Homan 12-3 in the last Continental cup and took 6 in the first end!

I see Canada are 3-1 up against Italy after 2 ends - Italy are bottom of the table so Canada really should win that one! Eve Muirhead tonight will be interesting - she is either very good or very bad and you can never tell which one you will get!

That is also a wishful thinking not grounded in reality.

Look at the fields:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_...ng_Championship

There are some established names there, multiple time world champions/medalists/participants, Olympians, in this discipline. To say that Gushue/Homan or Gushue/Courtney will guarantee a gold against them is almost an insult to the sport and its athletes.

And Homan just had a baby, and has another young one at home. Yes, she played in Calgary bubble events, but that's local for her, and she had her mother and her baby as part of her entourage, and it was a sacrifice she made due to commitment to her revamped Women's team to make a run for Olympics.

Asking her to make another sacrifice for Canada, for a secondary discipline that she has a prior commitment with John Morris, is unrealistic.

Sahaidak/Lott is the most realistic option, in my opinion, based on precedence (2016), and the proven record of that particular established team.

Have they announced when the postposed draw 7 will be played?

Also, draw 16 on CZ is wrong as Canada is supposed to play Estonia then. It looks like they duplicated draw 17.

The funny thing is if they do make it to the play-offs after the start they had, I'd quite fancy them to make the final at least. Mainly on the basis that their confidence would be restored and also having the (cliche altert) 'momentum'.

Well of course the Trials winner will want to play it but the logistics may not allow it. They could win the Trials Sunday night and the last chance deal might start the next day or 2 over in Europe.

Totally agree, they run the table and look out. I'm not writing them off yet, they beat Scotland tonite and 8-5 looks very doable. They lose it's tougher but 7-6 might get a tiebreaker.

" Danger again of assuming Canada will beat all comers" Martym

Did you ever consider my comment is merely a prediction? Hopefully, there's no "danger" in that!

The example you used indicating that Koe played in a losing Mixed Doubles match in the last Continental Cup with Homan is incorrect. In fact, Koe was not selected to play in the Mixed Doubles with anybody. In other words, using the catchphrase of the month, your statement is not "grounded in reality". lol

If so, that would take them well past the event's end, wouldn't it?

Of course, this is Alberta and a trickster/maniac like Jason Kenney is in charge. Kenney could change any of the rules is he so pleases!

A real mess on the standings following the last round of games.

Scotland, US and Denmark all won - China lost to RCF.

So Canada now tied in 8th with Germany and Korea on 3-5. Denmark in 7th on 3-4.
China in 6th on 4-3
US in 5th on 5-3 and
Scotland in 4th on 5-2

https://worldcurling.org/events/wwc...ageType=results

So the Scotland game tonight is must win for Canada - if they lose I can't see any realistic way they make the top 6 and get a direct Olympic place..

PS anyone seriously think they are going to have any more tv/you tube broadcasts? All the broadcast crew bar the 7 positive tests remain negative - maybe they can find a solution and enough crew to broadcast one game instead of the usual 2 from Thursday?

Agree its tight in the middle of the table. I think Canada can squeak in at 7-6 as they have a good DSC record compared to other teams not starting with S (I'm including the Soviets). The game against China could be huge.

Scotland outcurling Canada by a bit in the first half. Eve’s long run back in the 3rd against two may have been a game saver
