Custom Import Rule
They must've thought it through, but didn't come out the other end on this one. Worried about teams pulling in ringers, from out-of-province, just to try to win the Scotties when one of their team members is pregnant? Well, disallow players from [a range of] higher ranked teams. Don't arbitrarily cut off *all pregnant athletes* from benefiting from the *new* rule. This could've been a global step forward, showing progress of Canadian sports. Instead, it kinda feels like insider trading. Fix it please.

They fixed it.
Residency rule is taking the low road to history anyway, but still. It was really a dumb move.

My conspiracy theory is that they did this on purpose to show everyone how dumb the residency rule actually is.
Yes, their reputation took a temporary hit, but now everyone sees that pregnancy is more important than residency rule at Scotties/Brier. For years, they've basically tried to show that various aspects of life are more important than residency rule, for example by having the student exemption (because some people need to move to pursue education) and the work exemption (because some people don't live and work in the same province). Still, some traditionalist naysayers weren't on board and kept on insisting that residency is more important than life.
With this pregnancy exemption, I think they pretty much got everyone to buy in, so maybe it was worth it temporarily sacrificing their reputation just to open everyone's eyes to the fact that, yes, this residency thing is pretty dumb.
My prediction is that they'll add marriage exemption next (i.e. a person can keep representing a province post-marriage, i.e. Brett Gallant would've been able to keep NL residency even if he moved to AB post-marriage). Then maybe add sibling exemption (because siblings who want to play together may not live in the same province), i.e. Kevin Koe can recruit brother Jamie to represent AB. Keep on adding all sorts of exemptions to cover various aspects of life.

All likely true clips. So, teams at provincial play downs will need approval from provincial curling governance (aligned with curlng canada). Pregnancy is a bit different because it is a team change - not original composition of the team. BUT... there is still a glaring paywall that has to be built to prevent full teams from one province to enter play downs elsewhere, eg Nunuvut or Yukon or ..other.. to get to Scotties/Brier. The import /residency tolerance line is moving, but has to stop somewhere? no? International rules are pretty tight. Players even have to wait a cycle. In the USA - it doesn't matter. Nowhere else matters. But here, it matters. I guess inter provincial championships will eventually end or be club curler championships. Tough one. Maybe they represent a CLUB located in a province, and some provinces have more than one rep. Like in Korea, Japan and USA.

I lost all respect for Scotties/Brier eligibility rules when they decided to punish Jamie Sinclair for playing in USA, even though WCF said that she's eligible to represent CAN because she hasn't represented USA since 2019.

Extremely unfair but don’t see the usual curling pundits protesting this. I think she would have made a big difference to Chelsea Carey’s team. I guess neither are CC favourites

I wouldn't call it a "protest", but GSOC commentators on Sportsnet did point out (in kinder words than mine) how stupid the Scotties/Brier eligibility rules are by rejecting Sinclair, who of course is welcomed in the slams with open arms whenever Team Carey gets the invite.
