Could be. I'll be keeping an eye out for an announcement. Ontario could look interesting in the new season.

Must be just for fun or the experience? They won’t use April’s winner for next years Scottie’s I wouldn’t think. Tough on the teams that have already made changes and those about to. Hopefully all the new teams are set by then so they can try out their new lineups. Will they have another qualifier to replaced the teams that have changed/stepped away/retired?

Which makes me wonder if the team is breaking up or just don't want to bother playing a bonspiel with nothing much on the line. I imagine after the Scotties that teams who aren't playing much (or at all if they aren't in the cashspiels) pretty well wind the season up and don't practice much.

Splitsville for Team Ruohonen

https://twitter.com/TeamRuohonen/st...891373276336128

Team Jenn Clark-Rouire is also breaking up. Sadly from what I cold see this team only managed to get one win in this year, back in September.

There is something on the line..a guaranteed place in the 2023 Ontario Scotties and there is $15k in prize money…

So, pretty much the first cash qualifier for the 2023 scotties.
There will be other tournaments with the same incentive.

Any system that forces the current Olympic bronze medallists and winners of 3 of your last 5 (6th pending) national championships to split up because of "residency" is stupid. Especially since I don't think a single Newfoundlander would take issue with Gallant moving West to be with Peterman given his decade long commitment to the province. Residency punishes smaller Eastern provinces and rewards Alberta.

Gallant was living there for years during the season. Maybe the government of Newfoundland and Labrador can grant the hometown provincial hero and Olympian official NL citizenship status.

Similar to come Olympic time, countries give out citizenships like candy to have athletes represent their country.

My prediction is Curling Canada will change the rule to allow 2 non resident imports per team to accommodate them. Hereafter known as the Gushue rule.

Edit.... how about this compromise? Currently it’s 3 must reside in or were born in the province and 1 import. What if they allow “previous” residents with proof thereof to still represent the province. That allows Gallant to still play for NL because he lived there I think 10 years. They could decide if 1 year is enough or have a set minimum amount of years to qualify.
Win win.

If Gallant has been screeched in I believe that qualifies.

There's also really nothing wrong with having specific rules for specific provinces. It's the whole equity vs equality distinction.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epgtQNPzETY&t=13m29s

If we acknowledge that curling in Canada needs more help in, say Nunavut than Alberta, then we can have a different rule that helps Nunavut but does not help Alberta.

Bingo. The question is,will CC be able to implement it right away. Gushue says he expects a ton of changes in the month (or less) after the Brier ends. Gallant or Walker would be a prime target for many teams. Does he grab his best offer or wait in the hope that the residency rule gets changed and he can stay with Gushue?

Gushue. Sly like a fox. Multiple interviews and pod casts and streaming discussing just this. That Curling Show, the Kevin Martin podcast. The Sportsnet interview. Who knows how many newspapers. Timely indeed. I don’t blame him one bit. The more people that hear and know the situation, the more questions will arise for Curling Canada. Many people will be asking the burning question, why? Then the greedy folks at COC and OTP will start thinking what gives us the best chance at the almighty gold medal? And more importantly keep our jobs? #performancebased

On the other hand, I’m a big proponent for the grass roots of curling in Canada which has been ruined by the quest for gold by all involved. CC COC OTP and even some provinces cheating the rules to try and send a better team. Again to keep their jobs....BCcurl a la John Morris scam years past during relegation. Google it.

So yes I’m all good with trying to get the best teams to the Brier, Worlds, Olympics, but don’t kill the sport doing so

Go Gushue Go. Go out with a bang if it is your last hurrah with this team.

Easy solution for Gushue: win the 2022 Brier, avoid worry about residency in 2023 and then you get CC to change it for the 2023/2024 seasons.

People don't seem to release that CC is a slow methodical organization that doesn't like to rock the boat and even more so upset the provincial and territorial Associations. There number one goal is to make money to pay for the over 30 staff that they have on their payroll.

Expecting a residency change over a year from now for 2023/2024 is pretty in line with past practice. Homan got it changed even faster than that when her schooling was ending.

Wouldn't surprise me at all to see McEwen step away. I said it earlier. He just looks tired . Maybe take a year to reset.

That's his usual look. There is never any emotion or indication that he enjoys playing. Win or Lose.
