Regardless. I've been out of town and just catching up a bit this morning. Are the rocks dead here? Is there a ton of friction between rock and ice? I can't recall a big event I'd seen where the rocks act as non-lively as they seem to do in what I'm watching now.

Russ indicated that the WCF had purchased the rocks from the GSOC. The striking bands are old and that along with wonky ice is creating non lively rocks. The first few games he said the pebble had been nipped too much. Sounds like this head USCA ice tech needs to go back to school. Close to 35 C on the weekend in Vegas,

I still don't understand how this concept is supposed to work in terms of physics and conservation of energy. So if rocks are lively, energy is conserved and stones transfer its momentum efficiently on impact. If the rocks aren't as lively, then I guess some of this energy is "lost"?

So how is this energy "lost"? Does it really take that much energy to make a different sound when rocks hit each other? Does it become heat some how? Do old granites becomes "squishy" and that's what "steals" the energy?

It looks to me like Edin has found his footing. And Canada finally a bit of a groove; great win over Italy.

I still expect they'll be the final two barring an upset. I doubt Edin loses again except to Canada. They started 3-2 last year as well then didn't lose again.

Who is the head ice tech…I noticed that WCF don’t list the event officials & ice techs

WCF absolutely does.

https://world-curling-federation.s3...20Officials.pdf

https://www.usacurling.org/press-re...-ice-technician

Shawn Olesen (USA) along with Mark Callan (SCO) were the two Deputy Ice Techs working under Hans Wuthrich (CAN) at 2022 Olympics.

Shawn Oleson (head USA ice tech) and his crew know what they are doing. In Middleton Wisconsin last month at the USA Mixed Doubles they turned the Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena into great championship curling ice. Weather, stone quality, facility shortcomings etc., all play into turning these venues into quality ice.

Finally watched the TSN broadcast. I didn't mind the "sad Italian music" TSN used in the game against Italy. It adds a bit of signature flavor to distinguish this specific broadcast. In fact, I think they should do that at Worlds whenever CAN is playing against known rivals. Wouldn't it be exciting if there's a specific musical cue that they use against Sweden, for example?

I think the TSN Season of Champions jingle is way overused. When we hear it, we know there's curling going on, but we don't know whether it's the Scotties or the Brier or something else.

I think at the very least there should be 2 additional signature jingles, 1 for the Scotties and 1 for the Brier. It doesn't even have to be entirely new. It can be the same composition but with different instrumental arrangement, something that distinguishes them so when we hear it, we know that "Yep, the Scotties is on!" or whatever.

Rival jingles would require new composition, but there are probably commercially available "sad Italian music" and its counterparts for other countries that TSN can license.

It's all about the width of the striking zone on the rock, some have a big fat one, some are narrow.

Why does the shape of the striking band matter?

If the rocks are about the same weight and hardness, about the same Ailsa Craig granite materials, why does it matter in terms of conservation of energy whether it has fat or narrow striking zone?

If older stones are indeed "squishy" and/or disintegrate into dust upon strike, then I can see how energy is lost, but I don't understand how the shape of striking band in itself can explain the lack of liveliness of stones.

It's more flat or concave striking bands versus rounded striking bands. Striking bands that are flattened out or have become slightly concave transfer less energy compared to rounded striking bands.

But how exactly? What mechanism is in play to make that happen?

I can understand if maybe suboptimal shapes will transfer more energy in the vertical direction, for example, hence "stealing" energy that would otherwise go to horizontal movement. So is that what happens with big fat worn out striking bands? Do the rocks jiggle up and down a bit more upon impact instead of just smoothly gliding sideways?

Quite a few f bombs from Team Scotland after they just set Team Dropkin up for a three before the break - which the WCF commentators Kevin Martin and Rhona Martin chose to pretend they didn't hear.

One thing you can say about Team Mouat - they would never swear!

If you hit someone with a 2 foot wide piece of plywood it hurts a hell of a lot less than if you use a 2x4.

Never too soon, except Will slapping you would be hack weight, Tyson would be Gunner peel weight.

The top 4 seems likely to be SWE/CAN/SCO/SUI which is probably who we would've predicted? SWE certainly seems cruising for Gold #6 despite their start with the inconsistent way Canada is playing. I'd like to see Italy/Korea be the last two teams.

Fun game. I felt like Canada had the better game, despite the outcome and statistics, but couldn't find a big moment. Both teams should leave that game feeling good, I think, Sweden a bit better.

First international tournament in quite a few years when I felt the Canadian team deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the other top teams in the tournament. Gushue having a great week.

Mark Nichols doesn't seem to be 100%. Never seen him make so many 1/2 shots.

Into the 7th end of Scotland vs Czech Republic and Czech Republic have had all 7 hammers.

They won the draw shot challenge and then the first six ends have been four blanks and two single-steals by Scotland.

Wonder if we’ve ever had a game where a team never had the hammer at all?

Scotland steal again in 7 to lead 3-0. Into the 8th now and still yet to see Paterson with the hammer
