Barry Fry Passes

The seemingly indestructible man known to curling fans as "The Snake" passed away in his hometown, Winnipeg last Friday.

Fry, father of 13 time Brier participant Ryan Fry skipped the 1979 Manitoba championship team featuring Chelsea Carey's uncle, Bill Carey at 3rd and Gordon "Sparky" Sparkes on the front end.

A constant pest on the Manitoba curling scene for the top trophies - Fry won many cash spiels, car spiels and numerous trophies in the Manitoba scene before the advent of professional curling. He is noted for winning the last Brier sponsored by the Brier's original sponsor - McDonald's Tobacco.

A rambunctious story-teller and mischief-maker at the various clubs he called home, Fry was a near dead ringer for his life-long friend and sometimes fierce opponent, Don Duguid. I was once fooled by this as a younger fan when I approached Fry at the Heather Curling Club and addressed him as Mr. Duguid. He had lots of fun (and practice) with this form of mis-informed identity so he humored me for a few minutes before revealing his true identity - John A McDonald . . . ! ! !

RIP - Barry Fry, a true Manitoba Legend.

I'm one of the good guys now!
