Where’s Mads? Best curler in that country. Must have lost their nationals??

Kevin Martin and Mike Harris had no explanation about what has happened with this team. They too were confounded by the lineup changes.

Mike Harris thinks Mikkel Krause is the best curler on the current Team Denmark, and yet he's listed as alternate (but playing in every game so far). Tobias Thune, the current skip, was actually listed as the alternate at the Olympics.

Has that ever happened before, where X was alternate for skip Y, then it goes the other way and Y became alternate for skip X?

Not sure but most recently when wcf had games on YouTube, maybe 2-3 years ago, Mads occasionally would be online commentating with the rest of the “viewers”. There was a bunch of viewers with him. Big following. Good guy.

And yes the Italy vs Russ has already been discussed yet again. Points to poster who said they’d do it again. And again. And again. New drinking game! Every year since he’s been in the booth.

Should/could easily be 0-4 for every team here. This is the worst ice in years (worse than the absolute crap in 2018). I don't care about attendance (COVID killed any Vegas appeal) but this ice quality is not acceptable. Canada needs to play a lot better but the way this tournament is going the winner will be the 6th place team stealing 8 in an extra end when the first place team hog 8 rocks due to the ice being melted and sanded in the slide paths.

I did have to laugh that World Curling peeled the # stickers of the stones and renumbered them. They must be loving this poor play and steal chaos. Anything to avoid having the good teams dominate.

Did they say that these are GSOC stones? Who owns them and how did they get there and why is WCF not using their own stones?

I know that WCF has a set of stones semi-permanently stored in Canada. Neither WCF nor GSOC would have stones stored in USA, I would think, so were these shipped from Canada? If they were, why not ship WCF's stones instead?

Presumably stones are shippable, right? WCF must have shipped their stones from AB for Calgary bubble events to BC for 2022 World Women's, right? Why not ship those to Las Vegas?

Were there no shipping in the first place because these stones are semi-permanently stored in Las Vegas, and whoever owns them just rent them out for World Championships and Continental Cups?

I can’t help but think how much Team Mouat would be destroying this mediocre field. You’ve got an out of form Edin, Gushue who is grinding out ugly wins, and then a bunch of nobodies.

In theory, sure? But who's to say Mouat would be any different than Edin and Gushue? They have not played in any meaningful competitions as a 4-man team (to my knowledge) since Beijing, where as both Edin and Gushue have.

It's an Olympic year, the Worlds was and is not the priority for the top tier teams - especially those who medalled in Beijing, regardless of what is said on Twitter.

Curling in the middle of the desert, trying to adapt to a new rule change, immediately after an Olympic championship. The curling was always going to be sub-standard this week. The least the WCF could do with all the Vegas money is make the ice playable.

I have to say the level of play through the first 2 days has been pretty poor. Just proof that going to Vegas was a mistake.the ice i laughably bad and that's a contributing factor I'm sure

The great irony, of course, is that the tick shot would be borderline unmakeable on this ice. And the no tick rule is just a recipe for disastrously bad curling on such bad ice. So what was already going to be complete crap quality curling is even worse because the rule set is designed for professional quality ice. How did this even happen after the same issue in 2018? It’s amazing, too, because we are talking about 6+ feet of curl and WCF goal is 4-4.5.

Imagine thinking this type of quality can grow the sport. No stranger will take seriously a sport where missing 40%+ is championship quality. We’ve gone back 20 years.

Yeah, this post is why I wish we had a like button

Will be interesting to see who adapts first and if Scotland, Switzerland and Sweden can figure it out in time.

From what ive seen so far it looks like Germany, Italy, Norway and Finland may be handling it best

This could definitely be Retournaz's best chance at a medal ever. I'd love to see them win silver!

Also for all the talk of Canada's bad play...they're the # team for shooting % at 84.8%. But Gushue is #2, 5.7% (!!) behind #1...Joel Retournaz.

Oh, I agree. He's already played Sweden and Scotland and will play Canada today. Essentially he will have 3 of the 4 pre event faves out of the way already and, at worst will he 2-2.theres no reason he shouldn't make top 6 here at least.

I'd really like to see Germany and Norway carry the strong play early through. Both could be top 6 if they do, which would be great. I've thought for q while they could have real potential and I've been waiting for them to break through.

The only thing is I'm not sure sixteen calling the game and throwing last works best for Germany. He gets in his own way to much . let Marc call the game and have sixteen throw last

Regardless. I've been out of town and just catching up a bit this morning. Are the rocks dead here? Is there a ton of friction between rock and ice? I can't recall a big event I'd seen where the rocks act as non-lively as they seem to do in what I'm watching now.

I realize that, it’s just nothing like a national/world event I’ve seen.

I kinda prefer it. Silly quadruple run backs thrown with back 8 weight shouldn’t happen.

They did a little montage of 2006 Russ photos and sad Italian music. They must know about our drinking game at CZ.

I think it's time to get new announcers.

I'm not watching live, so I can't say anything about this particular time they're doing it, but in the past, I've always loved these little stories and jokes. That's one way for a new fan to learn about the lores of Canadian curling!

Yes, that includes Joel Retornaz 2006 story. Yes, that includes Guy Hemming changing the scoreboard during power outage story. And so on, and so on. Canadian curling lore is full of these fun little stories!

Am I the only one that actually like it when TSN commentator banter with each other?

I acknowledge that sometimes I'm in the mood for more straightforward WCF-style 100% curling all 16 rocks per end live mics during breaks broadcast, but I enjoy the more entertainment-focused inside jokes and laughter TSN-style too.

All the WCF coverage was free to air on you tube until last year's worlds where not geoblocked - the full games and highlights are still there to view.

They are still releasing highlights videos for this year's worlds on you tube - but since the Europeans last November the full games are pay to view on recast. Not sure who is watching on recast - but it must literally be in the tens!

One loss as you highlight was the chat function. Mads was a regular and other well known curlers joined in occasionally including a well known Canadian female skip.

Still hope Mads is ok - and is back on Team Denmark where he belongs for next season. Hopefully by which time the WCF will have found a better platform so the chat function can be restored for Mads to give his insight!

I truly miss Mads and the other commentary crew on the WCF YT. Often preferred it over TSNs.
