Clubs Open 1 by 1

Social media is all over Leduc opening. August. Seems early. But, it is an event. Nanaimo announced it will defer opening until October. Haha, that is normal for around farm country. Some don't open until November. Natural ice? - Try January ( a Boxing Day opener sometimes happens if it is a cold December ). How many clubs have reduced sheet-count, to improve physical distancing? For elite curlers, they will need to find the open clubs, to practice. Club curlers will wait. Let's keep track and collectively toast each club that opens, with safety in mind. It's not just about the money. We can make it happen, for our game.

Highland in London is delaying until January. Chatham not opening at all this season as only 40% of the members said they were coming back.

I find that shocking, and unsettling. But we have not have had the extreme influx of cases here, **until lately** - so, these southern Ontario cases might be the norm. I hope not. I can see curling as safe, if people take the protocols seriously.

Also in the London region, London Curling opening in October.
St Thomas opening in October.
Ilderton delaying a decision until Sept 8 pending online registration numbers.
St Thomas will refund fees less a two week holdback if it is necessary to shut down after opening. They should really be giving a break on fees because of the 6 week spring closure.

I'm torn. I want to support my club and I think the risk will be low but at the same time I'm not interested in just showing up, curling and heading home. The fun of curling is the social part, shooting the sht in the locker room and having beers with your opponent afterwards. My club might have room for about 15 people in the bar so that's about 4 teams sitting 1 person to a table. The club barely gets by with the bar full so less than half capacity is trouble.

Me too, I love the socializing after the game, bonspiels, dissing the skip with my fellow sweeper...won’t be the same this season.

I do most of my socialization on the ice. Sometimes I'll stop for a drink after, but not usually. Day league, of course, so that's different. But the game does lend itself to that on-ice chat. It's not a total social blow-out if the restaurant/bar is limited. And those pros now know how to set up for social distancing aprés curl. Push tables together to make them bigger. Limit # of chairs. It can still happen. Don't give up yet. Wash your hands. Be careful. Monitor your own symptoms.

Manitoba's Morris Curling Club has a Junior 'Spiel on as we post. TeamLyburnJunior is giving us some instagram posts. It feels normal. It's not, but it feels normal. Bit by bit, we're pushing out of the old hack. https://www.instagram.com/p/CELJBdr...id=bsekc1x6d48x
EDIT: I double checked. It is a MJCT (manitoba junior curling tour) event. It is for real.
The MJCT page shows events across the province scheduled (read - #NotCancelled) at various clubs: St.Vital, Heather, Stonewall, Petersfield, Swan River, Elmwood - so, unless there is some carelessness - the season is under way. https://mjct.ca/events/

Note to the Manitoba posters...a full plane landed from TorontoI to Winnipeg...nobody was stopped we all went on our merry way. Yet your government website said that everyone coming from southern Ontario has to do a 14 day quarantine unless they are going to NW Ontario.

So CurlingGeek has a database of clubs and is reporting Open, Delay, Closed, or unknown, of 1000+ clubs in Canada and the USA. about 26% reporting. It's kinda fun to explore the database.

Another setback. Winnipeg clubs were set to open in next couple weeks but govt has banned indoor groups of more than 10 for at least a month so unless clubs get an exemption it's no curl for you.

So, out here in Westman, we had codeOrange for two cycles of the virus (2X14 days) and we got through it. (back to codeYellow here) Granted, (or could say, granite) curling hadn't started yet. That said, Neepawa and Minnedosa are moving forward as normal, so far. I haven't heard about the Brandon clubs. Many non Wpg clubs start in late Oct/early Nov anyway (because of farmers' schedules). So, setback, yeah. Can people practice in small numbers?
Further: I know that gyms and yoga studios are remaining open (we did through code orange), with special protocols regarding masks etc. I bet they will be allowed to go forward. Finding the exact covid-rules is an exercise in research, but they are somewhere on the govt website.

Stay the blazes home

Maybe if other provinces had the balls to tell their people, hey, there's a pandemic, "STAY THE BLAZES HOME" back in late march like NS did you wouldn't be in the mess you're in now, especially ON and PQ. Yes smaller population but 1000 times less per capita infections. Thank God we've got the Atlantic bubble to try and keep out the infected, and fine 1000 dollars those that don't adhere, with locals more than willing to blow the whistle. There's been many fines, especially students from away not following the rules. Two thumbs up to NS premiere and DR. Strang to enforce and educate.
All HRM clubs will be open with the new rules, most are open now.

Doug Ford simply catered to businesses. Open them up asap. This was the man who said go enjoy March break, who high tailed it to his cottage while imploring others to stay home and who hosted a family Mothers Day gathering at his house.
Finally admitted today that ON is in the second wave and what does he close first? Strip clubs. And the same day Ontario many casinos opened. Cha-ching for govt coffers.

Well my club is opening up with 33% less teams than last year. Hope the renter leagues are strong because the club was just getting by before.

Signed the ridiculous curling waiver and hit the ice. Very strange with the masks and the sweeping rules but it is what it is.
Club lost 34% of regular league members. Renters leagues way down as well, one quit altogether and others are using way less sheets. Looking grim.
Is my club the norm or just a worst case scenario?

My club lost close to 50% but picked up 2 small rentals from clubs in the area that haven't opened yet. The going thought seems to be if you have 50% you can perhaps break even. One ladies league down from 14 to to 8 and another from 14 to 10. But ladies don't support the bar so no extra revenue from them. Men's leagues at night can only stay for 1 hr after game ends if there is another on the ice.

PS
A good lawyer would tear that waiver to shreds in a courtroom. Roof caves in and you can't sue? Yeh , right.

I got a call today regarding my league. I guess it is a go. 4 sheets. Not sure how many draws per week, but day league, women, and men are all a go at some level.

1 more region added to the naughty list in Ontario, I read that Winnipeg is now code orange...doesn’t bode well for curling.
