I'm kinda pulling for Morozumi because they have the best pants in the game right now.

An incredible playoff round, with four very dramatic matches.

Philoseek Aomori suffered an epic meltdown in their 3-4 match with SC Karuizawa, somehow turning a 8-1 lead after six into a 8-11 deficit after nine. It takes a special combination of poor execution and abyssmal game management to give up a steal of five when you're holding a big lead. They made it interesting in the tenth, but eventually ran out of rocks, giving SC Karuizawa an unlikely birth into the semi-finals.

In the 1-2 game, Chubu Electric suffered a less epic but still fatal meltdown against Loco Solare, allowing their foe to put up 1s in every end in the second half for a comeback 7-4 win. They were likely missing the presence of their coach, Yusuke Morozumi, who was busy skipping his own team to a 6-8 loss in the men's 3-4 game to Consadole. Loco Solare moves on to the finals, while Chubu Electric faces SC Karuizawa for the other spot.

Another meltdown occurred from Kitami Association, who missed draws for the win in the 10th and 11th ends to allow the men's SC Karuizawa team a come-from-behind 11-9 victory and a birth in the finals. Kitami Association gets another chance to right the ship, as they will play Consadole for the final spot.

The ladies SC Karuizawa team became the first team, male or female, to advance to the finals after finishing fourth in the round robin. Their semi-final match with Chubu Electric was a poorly-played affair by both sides, but it was SC Karuizawa that found themselves with a fairly easy take for the win on the last rock that they did convert.

Kitami Association bounced back from the morning meltdown to dominate Consadole in the men's semifinals. They will meet the men's SC Karuizawa for the national championship, starting about 90 minutes from now.

A writeup on the event from the Curling News.

https://www.si.com/curling/news/fam...-curling-titles

Two weeks from now is the Mixed Doubles championships. If any of the Loco Solare pairings win, they'll be quite busy with two world championships and two Grand Slam events all over the globe.

Who's in the Mixed Doubles championship? Did they scramble up the teams from previous years?

About the only team that I think are staying together is Chiaki Matsumura/Yasumasa Tanida, who won the MadTown DoubleDown beating big names along the way. They were Japan's representatives for the 2021 Olympic Qualification Event and 2022 Worlds.

The draw and teams have not been announced yet. In addition to the teams that qualified through regionals and the finalists of the last contest from two years ago, it's expected that many of the teams seen since 2018 will be invited to return. Yamaguchi already mentioned his participation on Youtube, and he was practicing with Fujisawa at a recent JCF sponsored boot camp, so I assume they are basically a lock.

The participating teams for next week's Mixed Doubles Championships have been announced:

https://japan-mdcurling.jp/teams/

In addition to the finalists from the last time the tournament was held two years ago, the teams of Yuta Matsumura/Yurika Yoshida (previous champions) and Yasumasa Tanita/Chiaki Matsumura (previous runner-up), teams receiving a special invitation include two-time former champions Tsuyoshi Yamaguchi/Satsuki Fujisawa, Tetsuro Shimizu/Chinami Yoshida, and Gou Aoki/Tori Koana, with Ms. Koana, the former skip of Fujikyu women's team, making her first return to competitive curling since childbirth. All of the aforementioned teams have competed as a team before, so no dramatic new combinations that I am aware of.

For true Japanese curling diehards that follow Fukuhiro Ohno's Youtube broadcasts, frequent guest Hinako Sonobe will also be competing with her partner Ryo Ogihara.

The schedule can be found here:

https://japan-mdcurling.jp/schedule/

A tool such as Google Translate does a good enough job to tell you which teams are playing.

Up to the final day, all games will be broadcast on Youtube. Unfortunately the final day will see the more important games moved to Japanese television, but you will still be able to view a semi-final and the third place match.

DSC is guaranteed to play a role. 21 teams are split into three seven team round-robin blocks, with each team playing six games. Teams advancing to the quarterfinals are the first and second place teams from the blocks. Of the third place block teams, the team with the best DSC score advances directly to the quarterfinals, while the remaining two third place teams play a play-in match for the final spot.

Quarterfinal matchups will be made with the following two points in mind:

1. None of the first place teams will meet each other in the quarterfinals.

2. In as far as possible, none of the matchups will be between teams that faced each other in round robin play.

Midway through the fourth day of play, and as of yet there has not been a single result that I would classify as a major upset. Amongst the last tournament's finalists and the four "strengthing" teams selected for this tournament, their only losses incurred have been the result playing amongst themselves. The closest we got was Ikuekan University taking two time former champions Satsuki Fujisawa and Tsuyoshi Yamaguchi to the limit. They led 7-6 going into the final end, but had already used their timeout and had less than a minute on their clock going into the final end, leading to some rushed shots that ultimately let the FujiYama pair pick up the necessary deuce with relative ease.

This game can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDBeDbPi2Qk

One other team with a good chance of making the quarterfinals is the team of Hinako Sonobe and Ryo Ogihara (her coach). They use the interesting tactic of having the man throw first and last rock when they have the hammer, and the woman throw first and last rock when the hammer is with the other team, making them the first team I have seen that takes advantage of the ability to switch throughout the game.

Regardless of their performance here, they were already successful in meeting the goal of their crowdfunding campaign:

Bryzgalova/Krushelnitsky used to switch in 2016-2018: he primarily throws first and last, except when the opposition uses powerplay against them, in which case she throws the tick shot and he throws the middle 3 after to blast things around at the first opportunity. There were exceptions, but that was the general pattern.

Today will see the final two rounds of round robin play, the play-in match between the two group third place teams with the worst DSC scores, and the quarterfinals.

Group A is the group of Death, and there are four teams with a shot at the three spots. Four time former champions Team Tomabechi is through to a top 2 spot at 5-1, and the Koana/Aoki pairing will likely beat winless Team Kumamoto to go 5-1 and join then (Koana/Aoki would be first by virtue of their head-to-head win over Team Tomobechi). Third place would be team Nishimuro/Tsukamoto from the Kanto block, who upset the strengthening team Team Yanagisawa to move ahead after identical 4-2 records.

Group B is fully decided. First place is the undefeated Matsumura/Tanita team, second place is the team of Chinami Yoshida/Shimizu, and third is the Tsuruga/Minami team, which defeated the Sonobe/Ogiwara team from the crowdfunding site that I was pulling for.

In Group C, the top three teams are decided, but the positioning is not. 5-0 Team FujiYama can clinch first place with a win over the 4-0 defending champions Yuriko Yoshida/Matsumura, who will first play the 4-1 Ikuekan University team. Most likely Ikuekan loses to claim third place, and the top two spots are determined by the FujiYama vs Yuriko Yoshida/Matsumura match. But if Yoshida/Matsumura lose both matches, there is a chance that they could be forced into the third place playoff match, and thus face the prospect of playing in all four draws today!

I realize now that I misread Group B. There are actually three teams finishing 3-3: Sonobe/Ogihara, Tsuruga/Minami, and Funaki/Kamata. And they are all 1-1 against each other, so will go down to DSC.

Looking at the LSD scores, I would guess that Tsuruga/Minami are still going through, but maybe Sonobe/Ogihara has a chance if they did well in their LSD in the match they just finished.

A poor LSD in the final game cost Sonobe/Ogihara dearly, as they lost out to Tsuruga/Minami on DSC by just 1.10 points. Furthermore, their DSC was best among third place teams, and secured them a direct spot in the quarterfinals.

The final quarterfinals spot is now being contested between Ikuekan University and the Nishimuro/Tsukamoto pair.

Chiaki Matsumura/Yasumasa Tanida won and will represent JPN at 2023 WMDCC. I'm not surprised at all.

In 2021, Yuina Miura's team lost a very close game for Japan's junior women's title. However, she was invited to Worlds as a reserve for tge national team. She ended up playing most games as a third, and the team made an unlikely run to win Japan's first ever curling world title.

This year, she is back at junior world's as the skip of a team wholly put together by the JCF. Despite looking completely overwhelmed at times, they managed a couple of incredible comebacks (including one game they won despite being down four after eight ends) to squeak into the final spot of the playoffs, and today somehow pulled off a win over undefeated Switzerland to advance to the finals for a second straight year.

If you hate Recast as much as I do, you'll be happy to know that the finals will also be covered live on the Olympics Channel Youtube site, free of charge.

What's JSF? Japan Sports Federation? Not even curling specific?

I'd love to learn about how this team was put together. I admit I haven't watched a single whole game from this tournament.

JSF was a typo for Japan Curling Federation.

Wowee the women's final at 2023 World Juniors was a dramatic one. The shot for 3 to tie in 9th was spectacular. The winning celebration was emotional.

Feel so bad for Yuina. The pressure of being a fourth/skip was really laid bare there.

But they should still be very proud of their silver medal. Powerhouses like Canada and the US couldn't even avoid relegation.

Chiaki Matsumura/Yasumasa Tanida are the sole undefeated team at 2023 World Mixed Doubles after first 4 days, 6W0-0L. So excited!

I'm still hoping for Jones/Laing to win gold, though.
