Who are the teams that have played mixed doubles events over the last four years and consistently finished well. Do Homan and Morris have international experience in Mixed Doubles? Have they medaled as a team in Mixed Double world competitions?

Name recognition is not everything in the Olympics, Every games we learn the names of those who were previously unknown and who have risen to the challenge the games have presented and performed in a manner to make us all proud.

I cannot cheer for a team that I believe was gifted with a spot over teams that were more deserving.

Gifted is not accurate. Morris/Homan are 45-4 and have won 4 of 6 events they entered. That's elite.
You may prefer a different pick but that does not mean H/M do not belong in the final few teams considered any one of which is justifiable and not "gifted".

How about Courtney knowing she was md commentator but suddenly she KNEW she was Olympic commentator either before or literally seconds after Homan was named to the Olympics. Foresight? Inside information? Say hmmmm.
Huge BS from CC COC OTP. You can fool some of the people some of the time..
Not the rest of us. This decision was discussed and made even before the md trials were cancelled. What if? OMG what do we do?
Pull up those red coats and button up. How do we save our jobs? Can we blame it on COC or OTP
Let’s pretend the pick was forced upon us, and we can say after the fact, they made us do it.
Stop drop and roll. CC is on fire.

Again sorry if I get negative at times but this is pure BS.

You know what's ignored here?

Rachel Homan just screwed over her teammates.

Chosen to go to the STOH based on their rankings-as a team-those other 3 and their hard work to gain that CTRS spot just got tossed to the curb because their skip chose a free ride to Beijing over them.

If it was me? I'd never step on the ice with her again.

Lol. I realize your really heartbroken that your fave team didn’t get picked. But, trying to put any distress on Homan because she chose olys over Scottie’s ( which her team is going to anways) is petty. I’ m pretty sure this was discussed amongst the team as they had a few days of warning before the decision was made. The blame should be put fully on CurlON.

I stand by my choice of words. Homan and Morris were gifted with the spot as the representatives of Canada in the Olympic Mixed double spot. Do not confuse a condemnation of the selection process as a lack of recognition for their skills. They are elite curlers but so too are others in mixed doubles. If you focus on mixed double curling results alone, and let performances in 4 person team competitions fall away, you will see that there are the same names that keep rising to the top in national mixed doubles play. They too can be deemed to be elite players. You put a lot of emphasis on the mere 49 games Homan and Morris played together and yet you fail to examine the games played/success rates of other elite mixed teams. One can employ all types of machinations to justify a conclusion but if the end result lacks the appearance of fairness, it will be suspect.

I think Martin/Griffith would have been picked if they had a better record of winning big championships. They didn't even make the playoffs at the last nationals. Did anyone think they were legit favourites at the trials?

I have no favourite or preferred team. I would have liked the selection to be on the ice but I understand the reasons that the trials as planned could not take place.

Having said that, an alternative such as taking the top five teams under consideration and having them participate in a mini playdown (without all the bells and whistles attached to the large Canadian event). Not perfect but manageable in a bubble and better than a flat out "We picked who we wanted and then twisted the selection criteria to match our choice." scenario.

In the absence of an on ice winner take all experience, I would have looked at games played and performances as a mixed doubles team at a high level of competition. For example, in 2021 Morris played with Schmiemann not Homan (yes she was pregnant/had baby, but the focus of my point is play as a team at a high level). In that 2021 event, Gushue and Einarson won, but in the final were Sahaidak and Lott. In the semi final were Walker and Myers.

In 2020 the Canadians were cancelled.

In 2019 Sahaidak and Lott were in the semi finals and Martin and Griffith were in the finals. Morris was in the playdowns but played with Joline Campbell not Homan so once again, no team play experience at a top tier level garnered from that event.

If we look at recent mixed double performance indicators, in the December 2021 CMDR points, Weagle and Epping and Martin and Griffith were ahead of Homan and Morris.

I see other teams I think should have been given the nod but as for a preferred team, I don't have one. I am all about fairness in a process.

Correction: Park/Thomas and the Tucks were also selected to represent Canada at 2015 New Zealand Winter Games. They were the 2015 and 2014 Canadian champions.

This event was not sanctioned by WCF, but this was the first time they tested the new 2015 rules (powerplay and all that jazz), so it was quite an important event.

Park/Thomas won gold.

-------------------

Of course, there were other teams representing Canada in later years.

2017: Park/Thomas (silver)
2018: Jones/Laing (gold)
2019: Desjardins/Desjardins

So some disagree with the choice, some don’t. Oh well.

I have been drilling into twitter and other places to find out who will replace John Morris as the coach of the NZ (oops Australia - thanks Clips) MD Oly team. I am following that team and haven't seen any announcement. I just wonder if they will still have a Canadian coach. This is a cool professional curling job for someone - Olympic Mixed Doubles Team Coach. Does anybody know who got the job?

I think you mean Australia, not New Zealand (and yes, that's an important distinction!).

The Curling News reported that they'll go back to their primary coach.

https://www.si.com/curling/news/mor...ic-curling-team
"Morris’ place will be taken by the pair’s domestic coach, Pete Manasantivongs".

This is the same guy that Morris "fondled" (is that the right word?) at the coaching bench when Australia qualified for Beijing.

TV Coverage

Anyone been able to figure out if the mixed doubles will be on TV or just on streaming? CBC site or GEM? I find the CBC sites kind of confusing at this point.

I believe they will be showing the mixed doubles curling on TV. CBC is showing they are beginning their Olympic coverage on TV on Feb 2 at 8pm ET. Canada's first game is at 8:05pm ET on Feb 2.

Sweden curling update.

One coach has tested positive. No curlers at this point have tested positive.

However, the mixed doubles back up plan for Oskar and Almida is Rasmus Wranå and Isabella Wranå. #cbccurl @CBCOlympics

Eriksson has presumably been practicing with Edin. If he tests positive the entire team could be out.

some sour grapes, really, but I see where Nancy Martin - without Tyler Griffiths, won yet ANOTHER mixed doubles event this past weekend. Griffiths has a newborn and his replacement was Greindheim. They defeated Laycock/Hersikorn in the final - so no slouches there. They were robbed. I am softening and hoping H/M do okay, but still. Grrrr.

Not sure how impressive this is. No other teams of note, including all the major teams from the trials, were there. The last major tournament with all those teams present was the 2021 nationals where...they missed playoffs. But playing these events when other teams are busy with 4 person does explain why they can be so high on the CTRS.

Apparently icemaker Hans has been having trouble with the building at the olympics, couple sheets not curling, had to reflood, hopefully gets it all straightened out by tomorrow (Although Morris and Homan are probably better than most at reading the ice and adjusting accordingly).
