This is a quick list of curlers I've compiled, who made an appearance in Canadian Juniors from 2001 until now, along with a notable recent appearance in elite-level curling in current Olympic cycle (after 2018).

There are going to be notable omissions, especially since I got too lazy at the end. There are 160+ names here.

There may be minor errors. Please correct me with references to something verifiable.

It's a veritable who's who of present-day Canadian curling.

There's a couple of names there that are notably NOT Canadian curling anymore.

Jamie Sinclair has and still is committed to representing USA.

Lisa Farnell represented England at last 3 European Championships (2017, 2018, 2019).

There are cooldown periods in the rules, so they won't be representing Canada any time in near future.

The suggestion that a huge portion of promising Canadian junior curlers are not joining adult competitive curling is provably false. Of course people of that age should be allowed to discover themselves and pursue their dreams, whatever those may be, but as far as curling is concerned, there's a healthy amount that have joined the adult competitive curling scene.

I can only think of one name that is often brought up as a promising young curler that decided to retire: Mary Fay. Old reports state that she decided to pursue academics in medicine, which I think most people would agree is more important than curling, pandemic aside.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova...-game-1.3561306

She left behind Kristin Clarke, Karlee Burgess, and Janique LeBlanc.

Karlee Burgess picked up 2 more World Junior golds, plus a silver and a bronze, and played in 2021 Scotties.

Kristin Clarke picked up 1 more World Junior gold, and played in 2020 Scotties.

I would venture to say that every top curler in every province was once a junior. I don’t see the argument. Because some former juniors have not advanced in men’s or women’s does not mean that they no longer curl.

There are some famous exceptions, e.g. Chelsea Carey, who was personally advised by another famous exception, i.e. Dave Nedohin. Nowadays she's inarguably a top curler, but there was a period in her life where she lamented the fact that she didn't win anything in juniors.

I recommend giving her Stone & Straw podcast episode a listen.

https://stoneandstraw.libsyn.com/s01e02-chelsea-carey
At 26m30s: "When we got knocked out at my last junior provincials, when I was aging out, I was devastated!"

All episodes are highly recommended.

-------------------

And I could be wrong (please correct me!), but I think Kerri Einarson was never a top junior curler either.

If they made it to provincials, I would consider them a top junior curler.

I love it when folks like Fresca and ML are crushed by facts. And Curlingclips you CRUSHED them.

Of course when lies and false information here in the the States are proved false (usually in the political spectrum) I am told "well, you have your opinion and I have mine".

Keep up the good work CC!

CurlingZone has a limited time window for editing posts, and it has expired, so I can't add to my original list.

I've since found a notable omission:

2009 Erin Porter 2020 Scotties

5x Scotties (2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020)
2020 CAN Mixed
2013 & 2016 CAN MD

This is already a long list, which is why I didn't try hard to make it complete (it's far from it). This particular omission needed to be addressed, however, because she is quite a decorated curler.

Also, Sandra Schmirler's daughter Sara England competed in 2017, 2018 & 2019 CAN Jrs. She teamed up with an un-retired Michelle Englot in 2020.

https://leaderpost.com/sports/curli...irlers-daughter

They played in 2020 SK playdown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ7IK2zdDRg&t=16m38s

Let me know if there are other notable omissions.

You keep moving the goalposts, but I'll oblige.

There may be some omissions here, but these people have won Worlds or Olympics, and are still active players in current Olympic cycle.

Marc Kennedy (2010 OWG, 2008 WMCC, 2016 WMCC)
Ben Hebert (+ 2003 WJCC)

Brad Gushue
Mark Nichols (2001 WJCC, 2006 OWG, 2017 WMCC)
Brett Gallant (2017 WMCC)
Geoff Walker (2006 WJCC, 2007 WJCC, 2017 WMCC)

Charley Thomas (2006 WJCC)

Brad Jacobs
Ryan Harnden (2014 OWG)

Brendan Bottcher (2012 WJCC)

Steve Laycock (2003 WJCC)

DJ Kidby
Dustin Kidby (2005 WJCC)

Braden Calvert
Colton Lott
Kyle Kurz (2015 WJCC)

Jordan Tardi (2018 WJCC)
Tyler Tardi (+ 2019 WJCC)

Colin Kurz
Brendan Bilawka (2019 WMxCC)

Sterling Middleton
Alex Horvath
Matthew Hall
Rylan Kleiter (2019 WJCC)

Jordan Peters
Brayden Payette
Zack Bilawka (2020 WJCC)
Jacques Gauthier (+ 2018 WJCC)

All of these people are still active curlers in current cycle. The latest World Junior champs, for example, played in 2020 MB playdown, and were invited to 2020 Champions Cup Grand Slam (before it was cancelled). Previous year's champs played in 2020 BC and 2019 SK playdowns.

No I haven't, but that doesn't preclude me from contributing in an open-minded discussion on curling and forming informed opinions using verifiable facts.

I'm honestly not sure what point it is that you're trying to make. If you can formulate something thoughtful and factual, we can discuss your concerns.

You mentioned "juniors" and "old folk". Let's start there. What is your concern with regards to junior curlers and old folk aging out/retiring?

I've compiled a list of episodes of Inside Curling podcast (Kevin Martin, Warren Hansen) that may be relevant to the topic.

----------------------------------------

https://podcast.sportsnet.ca/inside...eas-for-change/
33: The State of Curling in Canada: The Challenges, Direction, and Ideas For Change

This week the boys talk about the state of curling in Canada, along with the USA and the rest of the world. [...] The guys discuss some great ideas on how the sports can win back the under 40 crowd. Without doing that, Canadian curling is in trouble.

----------------------------------------

https://podcast.sportsnet.ca/inside...bout-the-sport/
37: What Tomorrow's Champions Are Saying Today About the Sport

19 year old Tyler Powell joins us on the show, part of the next generation of excellent young Canadian curlers and excited to discuss the state of curling. Tyler is a multi-sport athlete and also, among other things, the 2019 Canadian U18 silver medalist. He has some great perspective on what matters to younger curlers and some interesting takes about the sport's current image problem. We also discuss how curling needs to look at further promotion of the sport on social media where the next generation spends so much of their time. Is the future of curling actually mixed doubles? There's an age divide in curling. While there are calls for a change in the structure of championship curling, the majority of the over 40 crowd favour the status quo. [...]

----------------------------------------

https://podcast.sportsnet.ca/inside...t-corryn-brown/
39: Why Does the Junior Curling Season Have to End So Early? And Our Special Guest: Corryn Brown

This week, we're joined by Kamloops skip Corryn Brown, former Canadian Junior Champion, whose team will represent B.C. at the Scotties for a second straight year. [...] Corryn also jumps in on our discussion about junior curling and changing the qualification strategy. Also, some possible solutions on how we elongate the junior season, which ends so darn early. [...] We discuss how the under-25 curling crowd is loving mixed doubles and what everyone loves about Skins Games.

----------------------------------------

https://podcast.sportsnet.ca/inside...curling-canada/
44: The State of Canadian Junior Curling with Our Guest, Helen Radford from Curling Canada

Our guest is Helen Radford, Curling Canada Manager of Youth Curling and NextGen. We discuss the state of youth curling in Canada including: - Curling Canada's new U15 Rockfest and the NextGen program which helps lay the foundation for Canada's future champions. - Are doubles and triples the key to keeping our top young athletes in the sport? - How do get we exposure to curling added to school curriculums - Are there enough good coaches to instruct kids - Curling Canada is working with at least a couple of apps under development. [...]

----------------------------------------

https://podcast.sportsnet.ca/inside...ment-of-hearts/
45: We're Talking Scotties! The 2021 Scotties Tournament of Hearts

Tanner Horgan joins us with a young curler's take on the state of curling in Canada and the 3 changes he'd like to see.

----------------------------------------

I'm just guessing that your topic of concern is somewhere along these lines. If I'm mistaken, then I apologize, and you can clearly state what it is that concerns you, and we can start from there.

She has never won MB Jr provincial. But she won the 2019 World Mixed Curling Championship when she was just a 17 year old. She had to beat Kerri Einarson's team to get out of MB.

//edit: CORRECTION!

That news article was written while the 2020 U18 MB was going on. She ended up winning that event.

fresca has no point, never has. His spelling and coherency depends on how deep he is into that bottle of Canadian Mist or on a special day Forty Creek.

You on the other hand are very concise, astute, fact based and informative. More so than he or the "Legend".

Speaking of ML, you have made more factual points than he has in his combined 12,740 (and counting) posts.

And did I say how much I love your YouTube posts?

I actually think he does have some, but it's not clear because he does ramble incoherently with incomplete sentences at times.

Elsewhere he lamented that top curlers still need a second job, as if it's an inherently bad thing.

I agree that it does sound crazy that Sven Michel, for example, is a bricklayer.

That's right! The 2 time world champions in mixed doubles, 2 time bronze medalist in World Men's, has a job laying bricks!

Now, I don't know anything about that job, how laborious/how much it pays/etc., but that does sound kind of crazy on first impression!

Thankfully, as far as I know, no top curler has ever gone broke due to poor financial situation in curling. Sometimes they have to choose between curling and other things, but everyone have to make tough choices in life, so that in itself is not a bad thing.

Mike McEwen did take a huge financial risk when he quit his job to get more serious in curling, I think just to get one step closer to getting into Canada Cup? I don't remember the details. But it's a funny story in retrospect, since he was already married to Dawn at the time.

Turned out well for him, obviously.

//edit: yup, starts at 16m50s

He quit his job to go compete in John Shea Insurance Canada Cup Qualifier in 2007-2008, lost to Koe in the final, still qualified anyway.
