I, for one, enjoyed the event. Sure, maybe it could do with some tweaks but I welcome any spiel that's just a bit 'different', so to speak. The (marathon) Worlds, national events are fine and dandy and such, but it is good to have other events, too.

Congrats to Team Jones for completing the sweep in the traditional format game. Wasn't in the bag for Muyres/Walker, but little shame in picking up silver. Hope all these curlers enjoy a well earned time off for the season!

Edit: Just a cute thing to add, from the blog, Team Koe gave their jackets to Team Ba Dexin's team. Lovely gesture.

1. no team can compete in more than 2 legs. this would force teams like sweden and south korea to send at least their 2nd team

2. no team can compete in consecutive legs

3. wild card. and i dont mean the host getting an invite in. this is more specifically for mixed doubles. get some of those top mixed doubles teams not of the traditional curling powers in to compete and show them off. im thinking of paulova and paul of the czech republic, kiss and polanska of hungary , lill and turmann of estonia or fowler and fowler of england. [/B]

I'd go one better, no team can play more than one leg. Might FORCE countries to try and have more than one team, or at very least, give new teams a shot.

This is clearly Kate Caithness' baby- who else would have that weird NFL style intro, a Chinese bagpiper butchering the instrument ( notice one of the CDN men covering his ears?) and not make an effort to fill the stands. Go out to the street and give away the tickets, throw in some free noodles or rice and fill the darn building. You are not growing the game, you are turning curling into a laughing stock.

And Canada is being stepped on by China economically and politically and yet we send our athletes to a country who is one of the biggest human rights violators in the world!

i like that. if im right they do have a rule that says if a team wins one leg they cant compete again.

but i do think that forcing countries to send a different team every time would be a good idea. it would reinforce that "growing the sport" thing they claim this is for.

i dont understand why the swedish women never sent isabella wrana who would have been a strong choice in place of hasselborg.

i appreciate that scotland and switzerland at least didnt send the same team all the time. nor did the US . and canada took some chances by sending some lesser known teams. it didnt work out but they still tried.

but i think switzerland and scotland could have gone further. muirhead could have been sent to the grand final for example. hess could have been sent on one of the legs for the swiss men.

well, i think china is a major sponsor of this thing, hense them getting 2 legs and the final.

Simply put, this is a joke. Does absolutely NOTHING to grow the sport. Even somewhat embarrassing.

I enjoyed watching all 3 finals and did not find the event to be too contrived or whatever else the critics are calling it. It's not the Worlds but it was curling on TV which was nice. I really like the timing per end and no timeouts. I don't think the no timeout rule would go over for regular events but I like it.

ITA. Not every event has to be dead serious and the event was apparently well received by the curlers themselves, Koe is a fan of it personally and this is coming from a fella who really relishes the big games (namely the Brier).

I agree - no sense in bashing these events. China wants to up their international curling game? Why not fund a series of events to give their teams exposure. Or buy a bunch of Canadian coaches. Or send a bunch of b and c-level teams over here for tour events. At least they're trying!

I was thinking about the comments complaining about seeing the same teams over and over again. Depending on where you live, you watch the same hockey and basketball teams for 80+ games, the same baseball team 160+ games. And so we watch the same 5 curling teams for 60+ games. The flip is the Brier and Scotties (which I love and are great)...but most of those teams are only exciting to watch in that they either get hot for a game or two, or because they give up so many opportunities for big scores to the top talent.

I have no problem with tje wvwnt as a whole. The curlets like it and thats important. But dont bill it as a serious, grow the sport type thing when its clearly not. Its a fin, exhibirion style series in tje same vein as the continental cup and thats fine. Curlets need to have fun. Granted im not a fan of the contonental cup eitjer but i see its value for the curlets to just have some fun.

Like i said my problem comes when its billed as a grow tje sport event. Advetising outside twitter was non existant and tjete dodmt appear to be a great deal of effort put into filling seats. The audience for tje final was shamefully small

Im not going to debate with you about hockey or football because i pay no attention to either so dont know.

Its not like i want chaos. All im saying is that every time you get coverage is an opportunity. Instead of sending tje same team all the time give another team a chance. I understand for advertising you need big names tjere but tjey dont all have to be big and how do teams get recognized? With exosure. Tjere are so many good teams out tjere that nobody knows. The continental cup and world cup could be those opportunities.

One thing i think would be great of the continental cup to do is, for mixed doubles invite mixed specialists. Instead of breaking 4 person teams into duos take established m8xed doubles pairs. Nortj america could take sahaidak and lott for example. Europe or world could take fowler and fowler or turmann and lill.

Womens us exciting because you get those hreat stories and nreak out teams like silvernagle. I wish tjat would happen more with the men

Bottchers breakthrpugh has been a breath of fresh air and one can hope that dunstone, tardi and calvert..probably 3 best younger canadian rinks can soon do the same.

From my FB group "Rockheads" (I believe they wrote the live blog) -

"I hope everybody enjoyed the online coverage of the Curling World Cup Grand Final. It was an absolute blast to be a part of and hopefully that came across with the content.

I tried to get lots of your questions in, we managed to have an excellent Ulsrud contest and still have plenty of work coming to finalise the season soon.

Oh, and I saw a few comments on social media which were either slightly critical of the event or how many spectators there were. I can assure you, more fans turned up in Beijing than most Curling events - and more than any other CWC leg. On Saturday night it was packed and loud. Also, the players genuinely loved being part of it - the players were gutted not to win. I spoke to Silvana Tirinzoni moments after she stepped off the ice and she was distraught. She wanted it badly. This wasn’t an exhibition, far from it.

Have a good summer!"

its nice that the players take it seriously but they also take the continental cup seriously and what is that? an exhibition. you;d be hard pressed to find anyone accept it as anything else. and thats what this world cup is , an exhibition. the spirit of competitiveness is still there, they still want to win.

its like the laver cup in tennis really. europe v.s the world. the teams are competitive. matches are tight. emotions are high. they still want to win. but its an exhibition and nothing more. thats what the world cup of curling is. its the laver cup of the curling world

and there is nothing wrong with having fun

Rules tweak

Another thing "they" can take a look at is the points awarded. For the countries that continue to send the same teams over and over and over and over again.....cough.....Sweden being the worst offender, let the points earned from the first event ONLY count towards their World earned or OOM points. Edin for example went to all 4 and even though the grand finale points have not yet been added to his totals, he has earned well over 100 points. In fact 108 plus whatever he gets for the last one. If ONLY the first event counted he would have 25 points. Meaning, instead of an overinflated ranking of 3rd in the world, it would be 9th, a more realistic comparison to his peers that either went to one or none of these exhibitions.

Same for Hasselborg, 100 points plus the last event. She would only drop from 3rd to 5th but still a better reflection.

It's a trickle down affect with the rest of the countries.

Sweden earns all the extra bogus points inflating their world ranking, which not only gets them invited to the slams which allows them to earn even more points, but potentially blocks other teams/countries from getting into the slams at all because of their inflated points.

Pick one event only per team and go. Give the others a chance at the points pie.
