For the CAN vs NOR round robin game, Sander Rølvåg was commentating with Joanne Courtney.

This was interesting because Canada coach is Reid Carruthers, who won World Mixed Doubles silver with Courtney. For Norway, fourth Kristin Skaslien is 2x Olympic medalist in mixed doubles, although it's lead Martine Rønning that will represent Norway at 2023 World Mixed Doubles.

They discussed that this is becoming the norm for curlers to play and medal in both, and expects to see even more examples in 2026 (Stefania Constantini being an obvious one).

This is making me more convinced that Niklas Edin should definitely try to medal in mixed doubles for Sweden before he retires.

The attendance at the 2023 Women’s is as poor as I can ever recall. Can’t be more than a couple of dozen at this morning’s draw.

And I’m surprised that only 55 posts have been put up in the CZ World Curling Championship thread.

In the inimitable words of Buffalo Springfield: “There’s something happening here, what it is ain’t exactly clear.”

We can say "the world has gotten stronger" and it is true, but Canada is not performing poorly at Women's Worlds because of better international comp. They're performing poorly because they are playing poorly. The Scotties Einarson team would've destroyed this field. Instead they're curling like crap and losing to a German team playing in the high 70s. I don't understand what is happening to them.

Team Canada totally unable to handle the conditions. Symptomatic of the problems with all our competitive teams internationally. Too used to playing on perfect conditions. No ability to adjust strategy or execution when required. Hopefully David Murdoch will find a way to get a few young Canadian teams to play events in Europe where they can learn to make adjustments when required.

Wrong call in the last end. The long run back was no more than a 10% shot. The Germans promptly executed the draw that Canada should have. Mr. Carruthers deserves an “F” for talking Einerson into what was essentially a Hail Mary,

I think you are bang on!

They look like deer in the headlights in some of the games where the ice is not consistent and/or changing. Ice reading is/at least used to be, a major part of the game.

The team is made up of 4 skips as we are reminded every time.
Change up the line up bench Kerri.

Scotland drafted in Jen Dodds at third - Gina Aiken was benched - and they have finally won a game with an 8-7 win over the US.

You can't get relegated at the worlds - qualification is based on performance at the Europeans and the other qualification events.

And Scotland won the bronze so will compete in the Europeans in November to get a chance to play in the worlds.

The only team guaranteed to play in next year's worlds is Canada - as they are hosts - irrespective of the results this week.

No surprise that Scotland win a game when Dodds comes in at 3rd and plays a blinder. It’s absolutely criminal that the 2 Olympic champions that aren’t retired are either on the bench or sat at home watching this on TV. Scotland should be building a team around Dodds and Duff.

Yep. Coach Reid needs to be more thoughtful when giving suggestions.

Perhaps have Birchard throw third and Sweeting can hold the broom and throw second. Val wilts under pressure

That "other qualification events" is the Pan Continental, that's it. It's simplified now, everyone outside of European zone must qualify out of Pan Continental. There's no more Americas Challenge. No more Pacific Asia.

Interesting people here saying bench Einarson. Why do you care since you clearly aren’t watching this tournament. If you were you’d know that Sweeting has been as bas or worse than her.

Poor technique

As a trainer and coach for many years, I am surprised that no one has attempted to correct the release/delivery of Mme Birtchard. She has a useless opposite movement just before the release which can be a source of errors when the pressure is on.

@Maggie provided the curling canada link, however unless you subscribe you have to wait until they upload the games and then you can go through the archives and watch for free.

Maybe the trainers and coaches she works with are capable of observation. For example, observing that she is the top second this week so far despite the team's issues. Or that she was the top second at the Scotties. They might also observe that she has been the top second at every single Scotties she has played in. Well except 2018 when she was tied for top third.

We could also ask Mme Birchard herself, on the off chance she has thought about her own release: "I started curling with a regular release at 10 and 2 like everyone else, but then when I was 12 or 13, Lino Di Iorio came to Winnipeg to set up some video for practice. At the time, he was working with European teams, and teaching them this type of release. The theory is you’re eliminating elbow movement, you’re making your release a lot more similar. In the hack, you start your rock in the same position all the time, and it helps make your deliveries more similar too. It created more consistency, and it worked out well for me, and I saw no need to change back."

Fun fact: Shannon isn't the only Birchard with that release. Her sister-in-law Lisa also does the same.

Shannon also has a brother who curls. I'd love to see how his release looks like.

If you want to know why Canada keeps flopping at worlds and olympics, its because these events are rigged.

Canada is throwing games on purpose. Bad money drives out the good money (not that Canada has any but better than these basketcases...)

So it's rigged to make the people in those countries less concerned about their finances? I totally get it. I had money in silicon bank and was upset until the fixed tiddlywinks competition where Canada swept the medals.

It works just fine for her. I recall a few curlers in the 80s who used a counter turn as part of the release, not to the extent she does but it was there.
Releases evolve as does the game. We were taught never ever to push the rock at the end, just let it out of the hand. Now the push and the add are accepted and widespread.

Noticed that you didn't comment about the post that said Val wilts under pressure. Yet you shamed someone on the FB page that you are an admin for when they commented on Vals per performance.
So insulting someone's post here is ok?
