Edmonton-based Brad Jacobs (photo: Jeffrey Au) won 6-3 over Scotland's Ross Whyte after overcoming a hostile St John's crowd on Saturday. Jacobs, with Marc Kennedy at third, Brett Gallant, and Ben Hebert on the front end, rode the momentum of a wild quarterfinals match earlier on Saturday to jump out to a 4-1 lead over Whyte and his Stirling-based foursome. Whyte, with Robin Brydone at third, Craig Waddell and Euan Kyle on the front end, scored two points in the fifth end to cut the deficit to a single point but could get nothing going as Jacobs blanked the sixth and seventh ends. Jacobs scored two in the eighth end to season the 6-3 win. Scotland's Bruce Mouat defeated Saskatoon's Mike McEwen 5-1 in the other semifinal match. Jacobs will play Mouat at 5pm Newfoundland Time, 3:30pm Eastern Time, available on Sportsnet and Home Team Network, with a link available through CurlingZone's Scoreboard.
On Saturday's quarterfinals, Jaocbs faced the boo-birds in the seventh end, opting to give hometown favourite Brad Gushue a point to maintain hammer, then again in the eighth end, making the hit to score a single point for the 6-5 win.
In the other quarterfinals matches, McEwen defeated Germany's Marc Muskatewitz 6-5 in an extra end, while Mouat defeated John Shuster (Duluth, USA) 7-2, and Whyte defeated Joel Retornaz (Cembra, Italy) 6-4. Jacobs finished 4-0 in the 16-team round robin pools qualifying round. In their opening game, Jacobs defeated Niklas Edin (Karlstad, SWE) 7-1, then won 5-4 against Magnus Ramsfjell (Trondheim, NOR) and 10-5 against James Craik (Stirling, SCO). Jacobs won 6-4 against Retornaz in their final qualifying round match.
Brad Jacobs has a career record of 39 wins and 29 losses in 12 appearances at the KIOTI National, winning in 2019, and 2016. |
