Halifax's Christina Black (photo: Jeffrey Au) won 6-3 over Sweden's Isabella Wrana for their first Slam win. By Gerry Geurts, Black with Jill Brothers at third, Jenn Baxter and Karlee Everist on the front end now look to overcome the imbalanced schedule offered to the lowest seeds in the field to find a playoff spot at the KIOTI National by taking care of business inside their pool. Black got the all-important first win over Wrana, starting the game off by winning the pre-game draw to the button for hammer advantage. Black and Wrana traded single points in the first two ends, with Black making a big strike in the third end with three points. Wrana scored a single point in the fourth end, then stole another in the fifth end to cut the deficit to a single point. Black scored again in the sixth end, then added a single-point steal of their own in the seventh end en route to a 6-3 win. An imbalanced schedule used this week puts teams like Black at a disadvantage as the lowest seeds in the competition. As the lowest-ranked team in their pool, the single-game crossover format means Black faced two top seeds in their opening two games. Black lost to both, Ottawa's Rachel Homan, currently ranked #1 on the World Curling Team Rankings and top seed in Pool A and Gimli's Kerri Einarson, ranked #4 in the world and the top seed in Pool D. Homan and Einarson each play two games against teams seeded at the bottom of their pools. Before this season, pool formats featured a format where teams would crossover against all opponents in another pool, creating a balanced opportunity for all teams. In that format, every team would each face off against a one-seed, two-seed, three-seed and four-seeded opponent. Black faces Italy's Stefania Constantini on Friday at Noon Newfoundland Time (NT) in their final round-robin game. Constantini is 0-3 and eliminated from the competition, though, for Black, a win would put them at 2-2 and most likely give them a shot at a tiebreaker game. With only one draw set aside for tiebreakers, there are some scenarios where a high pre-game shootout score would eliminate Black from the competition, even if they managed to win. Tiebreakers go on Saturday morning, with quarterfinals and semifinals set for later in the day. Sunday's Championship Final goes at 12:30pm NT. |
