Sweden's Anna Hasselborg won 7-3 over Winnipeg's Kaitlyn Lawes on Tuesday at the KIOTI National in St. John's. Hasselborg, with Sara McManus at third, Agnes Knochenhauer, and Sofia Mabergs on the front end, started with hammer, winning the pre-game draw to the button for last rock advantage. The first end did not go as planned, with Lawes stealing a single point to open the scoring. Lawes, returning to the lineup following the birth of daughter Ella only three weeks ago, with Selena Njegovan at third, Jocelyn Peterman at second and Kristin MaCuish at lead. Hasselborg scored two points in the second end, then after Lawes blanked the third end, Hasselborg stole two more points for a 4-1 lead at the game's halfway point. Lawes scored two points in the fifth end to cut the deficit to a single, though it was the last time they would see the scoreboard. Hasselborg scored a single point in the sixth end, then stole two points in the seventh end to seal the 7-3 win. Hasselborg has a career record of 25 wins and 14 losses in 8 appearances at the KIOTI National, winning in 2021, and 2019. Hasselborg returns to action early on Wednesday, playing Korea's Eunji Gim at 8am Newfoundland Time (NT). Hasselborg and Gim are even at six wins a piece in 12 career meetings, though Gim has won the last three meetings. It will be their first meeting this season. Hasselborg finishes the round-robin with last season's World Junior Championship finalists, playing Japan's Momoha Tabata (Silver) at 4pm NT on Thursday and finishing on Friday at 8:30am NT against gold medalist Xenia Schwaller of Switzerland. Quarterfinals and semifinals take place on Saturday, with the championship final going Sunday at 12:30pm NT. |
