Homan wins Co-op Canadian Open
Team Rachel Homan's dominance of the curling scene continues with 16th slam title. (photo: Anil Mungal, GSOC) Homan, representing the Ottawa Curling Club defeated Silvana Tirinzoni (Aarau, Switzerland) 7-5 to capture the Co-op Canadian Open held at the Silent Ice Center in Nisku, Alberta. The #1 World Ranked Homan, with Tracy Fleury at third, Emma Miskew at second and Sarah Wikes at lead, started with hammer due to her undefeated round-robin record. Homan managed to get two points in the first end. Tirinzoni responded with two points in the second and added a steal in the third end to take the lead. Homan bounced back from the steal, cracking a big 3-ender in the fourth end, taking a 5-3 lead, adding a steal in the fifth end. Tirinzoni responded with another deuce in the sixth end, cutting the deficit to a single point. Homan took a single point in the seventh end, then ran Tirinzoni out of stones in the eighth end to win the final 7-5. Homan went undefeated with a 7-0 record through the weekend, improving to an incredible 33-2 record on the season. Since the start of the 2023/24 season, Homan has had 100 wins against only nine losses. Homan defeated Korea's Seungyoun Ha 6-1 in the semifinals, and Tirinzoni defeated Korea's Eunjung Kim 5-4. In the quarterfinals, Homan defeated Kerri Einarson (Gimli, MB) 11-5, while Ha defeated Japan's Satsuki Fujisawa 6-4, Tirinzoni defeated Italy's Stefania Constantini 7-4, and Kim defeated Winnipeg's Chelsea Carey 8-5. Tirinzoni, with Alina Paetz throwing fourth stones and Selina Witschonke and Carole Howald on the front end, took the longer route to the final. Tirinzoni finished the round robin with a 2-2 record, good enough to get them into the tiebreaker game Saturday morning against Japan's Sayaka Yoshimura(Sapporo, Japan). Three tiebreaker games were played, with Tirinzoni prevailing 6-2 alongside Carey winning 4-3 over Winnipeg's Kaitlyn Lawes and Einarson winning 8-6 over Edmonton's Selena Sturmay. Homan finished 4-0 in the preliminary round. In their opening game, Homan defeated Yoshimura 6-4, then won 4-3 against Sturmay and 9-3 against Carey. Homan won 5-4 against Isabella Wrana (Sundbyberg, Sweden) in their final qualifying round match. |
