Zheng/Pietrangelo win FISU Mixed Doubles Qualifier
Jessica Zheng and Victor Pietrangelo (photo: Connor Hood/Curling Canada) win the FISU Mixed Doubles Qualifier and will represent Canada at the World University Games in Italy, January 2025. By Meredith McCullum The final of the FISU Mixed Doubles Qualifier wrapped up in Edmonton, Alberta Monday afternoon with the final between Jamie Smith/Wyatt Small of Waterloo, Ontario, and Jessica Zheng/Victor Pietrangelo of Niagara Falls, Ontario. Zheng/Pietrangelo started out the scoring with a point in the first end with hammer. Smith/Small secured a deuce in the second end to go up 2-1. The teams traded singles in the third and fourth to put Smith/Small in the lead 3-1 half way through. In the fifth end, Zheng/Pietrangelo got their first multiple score of the game, scoring 2 points. Zheng/Pietrangelo then stole 2 in the 6th end to break open a 6-3 lead. In the seventh end, Jamie Smith tried a difficult angle take out on her last shot to tie the game up, but she could not capitalize and scored only one point, giving Zheng/Pietrangelo a 6-4 lead going into the final end. Zheng/Pietrangelo used their power play in the final end, meaning they get a corner guard instead of the typical centre guard to set up the end. This strategy paid off as Jessica Zheng made an open hit on her last shot to remove one of Smith/Small's two red stones in the house, making the final score 6-5 for Zheng/Pietrangelo. FISU Mixed Doubles Qualifier Finals Zheng/Pietrangelo vs Smith/Small: Zheng/Pietrangelo will now travel to Torino, Italy from January 13-23 2025, to represent Canada at the FISU World University Games. This will be the first time mixed doubles will be included as an event at the games. With them will be team Serena Gray-Withers from the University of Alberta and team Joshua Bryden from the University of Regina, both of whom won the 2024 University Curling Championships in Fredericton, New Brunswick and will compete in the four player discipline. Team Zheng/Pietrangelo went undefeated through the event and will look to continue that momentum as they put on their newly earned team Canada jackets in a few months. |
