(photo: Anil Mungal, GSOC) Gushue gutted out a hard-fought, 7-3 win Saturday evening over Winnipeg's Matt Dunstone. Gushue and Dunstone both advanced through the C-event bracket, meaning both were on their third game of the day. Gushue took the pre-game draw for hammer, using the advantage to score a single point in the first end. Dunstone, with B.J. Neufeld, Colton Lott and Ryan Harnden, scored two points in the second end to take an early 2-1 advantage. After blanking the third and fourth end, Gushue got their deuce in the fifth end to retake the lead, 3-2. After teams traded singles in the sixth and seventh ends, Gushue entered the eighth end up one point without hammer. Gushue forced Dunstone into a difficult last shot to score, stealing three to clinch the 7-3 win. The day started bright and early with an 8:30 am Atlantic time start against Niklas Edin, scoring a single point in the extra end to knock off the reigning World champions. The win booked one of the last three playoff berths through the C-event, where Gushue found themselves after two midweek losses. Gushue, with Mark Nichols, E.J. Harnden and Geoff Walker continued their grind in the quarterfinals against Scotland Ross Whyte, starting the game without hammer. After a blank, Gushue held Whyte to a single point in the second end as teams traded single points in the next two end. Gushue took their first lead of the game in the fifth end, scoring two points to jump ahead 3-2. Whyte did not roll over, returning favour with their own deuce in the sixth end. Trailing 4-3 with hammer in the last end, Gushue ran back a Whyte stone to lie what appeared to be two counters with his last shot of the end. After a measure confirmed the score, Gushue walked away with the 5-4 victory and a spot in Saturday evening's semifinals. |
