Sturmay Hangs on to Advance in PointsBet Opener
Selena Sturmay (photo: Curling Canada) and her team out of Edmonton, Alberta are advancing to the elite eight at the PointsBet Invitational after a tight opening match Wednesday afternoon. By Meredith McCullum Selena Sturmay, alongside teammates Danielle Schmiemann, Dezaray Hawes and Paige Papley, was matched against Ashley Thevenot's team out of Saskatoon, SK in her first match. Sturmay opened with a huge three points in the first end to take an early lead. The teams traded points in the second and third to make the score 4-1 for Sturmay through three ends of play. In the fourth, Thevenot scored a deuce to pull within one point. Sturmay blanked in the fifth end, then scored a deuce and stole a point to extend her lead to 7-3 through seven ends. Thevenot scored two in the eighth end and forced one in the ninth to keep herself in the game. Thevenot was only able to score two points in the tenth end, coming up just short of tying the game and securing a win for Selena Sturmay, with a final score of 8-7. Sturmay's rink will now face Kaitlyn lawes out of Winnipeg, Manitoba in the elite eight Friday afternoon. Last year Sturmay's squad lost to Jennifer Jones in the elite eight, so the team will be looking to push another round further at this year's event. Her team finished top of their pool at the 2024 Scottie's Tournament of Hearts in Calgary, Alberta. They made it through the playoff qualification games but lost 6-4 to Kate Cameron in the 3/4 page playoff game, finishing the Canadian Championships in fourth place in their first season as a team. They kicked off the 2024-25 season with a 3-2 record at the Saville Shootout, not enough to qualify for playoffs. They then went to the first Alberta Curling Series event, the ASC Major, at the Beaumont Curling Club from September 19-22. They made it through the triple knockout stage and quarterfinals before losing to Korea's team Gim - the eventual winners of the event - in the semi.
