Lawes Advances to PointsBet Elite 8
Winnipeg's Kaitlyn Lawes won 5-2 over U25 champion Taylor Reese-Hansen of Victoria on PointsBet Invitational opening day. Lawes, with Selena Njegovan, Jocelyn Peterman and Kristin MacCuish, opened the game with a steal of two. Reese-Hansen, winner of the U25 NextGen Classic at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton, scored a single in the third end to get on the board. Lawes, shooting a team-high 89% on the game, scored a single in the fourth end to lead 3-1. After Reese-Hansen blanked the fifth and sixth end, they were forced to draw for one point in the seventh end. Trailing by a point without hammer, Reese Hansen ignored the open Lawes shot stone, drawing around the corner guard to get the force in return. Lawes drew the open eight-foot for a single point and a 4-2 lead into the ninth end. Lawes' patience paid off, with her team bringing pressure in return leaving Reese-Hansen a difficult in-off for two. Lawes stole a point to improve to 5-2 on the scoreboard, finishing with a last rock double takeout to run Reese-Hansen out of stones.
Lawes lines up against Edmonton's Selena Sturmay, last season's Alberta Scotties champions who won 8-7 over Ashley Thevenot of Saskatoon. Lawes opened their season at the Saville Shootout at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton three weeks ago. Lawes went 4-1 through round-robin play, with an 8-3 win over Serena Gray-Withers of Edmonton to open the weekend, followed by an 8-4 loss to Tabitha Peterson of St. Paul, Minnesota. Lawes won 6-1 over Michelle Englot of Regina, 6-4 over Edmonton's Gracelyn Richards, and a 6-3 win over Myla Plett of Edmonton. Lawes lined up in a rematch against Richards in the quarterfinals, winning 6-5 to advance to the semifinals, where their weekend concluded with a 7-4 loss to Japan's Momoha Tabata. |
