Gim clips Skrlik to qualify at Shorty
Uijeongbu's Gim Eun-ji (Photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) scored four in the eighth end to defeat Alberta's Kayla Skrlik 8-7 and earn a playoff spot in Cornwall. By: Cameron Sallaj After splitting their opening games at the Shorty Jenkins Classic, Korea's Team Gim got back on track with wins over the Hollie Duncan and Carly Howard Ontario rinks to sit 3-1 in the standings. With a playoff spot looming, the team faced Kayla Skrlik's undefeated rink from Calgary, attempting to reach the knockout round. Following a shaky opening end which saw them hit against three, the Gyeonggi Province rink of Gim, Kim Min-ji, Kim Su-ji, Seol Ye-eun and Seol Ye-ji picked up a steal in the second end to start the game on the right foot. They then forced Skrlik to a single in the third, maintaining a 2-1 lead. With Skrlik flashing her last shot in the fourth end, it opened the door for Gim to draw to the eight-foot to score three points. Her shot went too far, however, settling in the back twelve. This only gave the Korean team two points and was the catalyst for the momentum shift in the match. Beginning in the fifth, momentum was fully on the Alberta rinks side as they picked up two points in the fifth end and stole a single in the sixth, thus tying the score. Then in the seventh, a significant misfire by Gim on her last rock gave Skrlik a steal of three and their first lead of the game, 7-4 heading to eight. With one end left to play, the Koreans needed help from Team Skrlik to have a chance of staying alive. They would get exactly this with two flashes from the Alberta rink, allowing Gim to play a short run-back on her first rock to sit four. A missed double by Kayla Skrlik on her final stone left the Koreans an open house to draw to for the win, which they made, completing the comeback in dramatic fashion. AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic - Draw 15 - Kayla Skrlik vs Gim Eun-ji: Improving their record to 4-1, Team Gim has now qualified for the seven-team playoff round in Cornwall. They join Team Fujisawa (5-0), Team Homan (4-0), Team Tirinzoni (4-1) and Team Skrlik (4-1) who had all previously qualified. Two more spots will be determined following the conclusion of the final women's round robin draw at 2:00 PM ET Saturday. Team Gim currently ranks 3rd on the World Curling Team Rankings thanks to a stellar 2023-24 season. The team won the 2023 KIOTI National Grand Slam, the 2023 Pan Continental Championships and capped the season off with a bronze medal at the 2024 World Women's Championship. In June, they defended their title at their national championship, meaning they will again be a contender for the Pan Continental and World Championships crowns this season. With all their success, the team is building towards the 2025 Korean Olympic Trials where the winning team will represent the country at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
