A revamped lineup for Halifax's Christina Black debuts this week at the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic in Cornwall. Black got within a whisker of qualifying for last season's early Grand Slams, starting the year ranked 16th overall, giving them a taste of what's possible. Their opportunity came at the HearingLife Tour Challenge Tier 2 event, where Black needed more than a quarterfinal finish to maintain that position on the rankings and put themselves into position to win the direct berth out of the Tier 2 event. Regardless of winning, a strong result would have also banked significant points and give the team a leg up in a week where nearly everyone in the top 32 was playing in the event. The gains were made by more successful teams. A runner-up finish in the Nova Scotia Scotties also limited the team's opportunity to earn valuable points at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Calgary. "We learned that since we don't play as many events as some other teams, it is important to do well in every event we play in," said Black ahead of the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic. A shuffle in the lineup saw Black keep three players from last year's lineup together while adding reinforcements. Black added Jill Brothers of Halifax at third, adding veteran experience with hopes of strengthening the lineup. Brothers has seven Scotties appearance to her name having reached a high of 11th on the Canadian Team Ranking System in 2022-23 season. Her skillset also brings added flexibility to the lineup, having played every position through her competitive career, she's also able to skip should Black need to be away. "I'm really looking forward to the new lineup", add Black. "Getting to play with Jill Brothers." Jenn Baxter remains with the team, moving from third to second and strengthens the lineup, while Karlee Everist continues in the lead position. Black also added Marlee Powers at the alternate position, another experienced player who played last season with Jessica Daigle and skipped her team before that. This flexibility allows Black to play more events without everyone having to commit more time, which is always a challenge for teams who have to work a full-time job outside the game. Powers is in the lineup the week at second with Baxter away. "I'm excited to see what this new version of Team Black can accomplish!"
