Switzerland's Xenia Schwaller won 7-6 over Kayla Skrlik of Calgary in Monday's Women's Final, as the Schwaller cousins take both titles. Schwaller of Zurich, with Selina Gafner at third, and Fabienne Rieder and Selina Rychiger on the front end, moves into the Top 10 on the World Curling Team Rankings. The team, just aged out of juniors having won the World Junior Championships in Lohja, Finland last March, are already making their mark in the adult ranks. In the men's final, Yannick Schwaller, cousin to Xenia won the title for Switzerland as well. Schwaller takes home 45 world ranking points, improving them to 9th overall on the rankings, just ahead of Canada's Kerri Einarson. With the runner-up finish, Skrlik, Margot Flemming, Geri-Lynn Ramsay and Ashton Skrlik, received 33.000 world ranking points moving the team from 27th to 22nd overall. Starting with hammer, Schwaller scored a single point in the first end, then forced Skrlik to a single in the second end. Schwaller scored two points in the third end, with Skrlik scoring three points to give the Alberta foursome a 4-3 lead at the game's halfway point. After a blank in the fifth end, Schwaller scored a single in the sixth end, then added a game-changing steal of three in the seventh end. Schwaller held Skrlik to a single in the eighth end, good enough for the 7-6 victory. In the semifinals, Schwaller defeated China's Rui Wang 5-3 and Skrlik defeated Delaney Strouse of Traverse City, Michigan, 7-2. Strouse defeated Japan's Sayaka Yoshimura 6-5 in the quarterfinals, while Skrlik defeated Italy's Stefania Constantini 7-3. Schwaller also won 6-0 over Victoria's Kayla MacMillan, and Wang defeated Ottawa's Danielle Inglis 7-1. Schwaller finished 3-1 in the 24-team triple knockout qualifying round. In their opening game, Schwaller defeated Jessica Corrado (Lakefield, ON) 7-2, then won 5-3 against Laurie St-Georges (Montreal, QC). Schwaller lost an A-Qualifier game 7-0 to Inglis, dropping into the B event, where a 7-3 win over Breanna Rozon (Oshawa, ON) qualified the team for the playoff round. |
