McEwen Rolling at Saville Shootout
Not even a crash-out-burned-rock could slow down Mike McEwen (photo: Anil Mungal, GSOC) on Saturday. McEwen, with Colton Flasch, Kevin and Daniel Marsh opened the Saville Shootout with four wins to put themsevles into a playoff berth. With Sunday's final round-robin draw to come, McEwen faces off against Winnipeg's Jordon McDonald, also 4-0, to determine who will be Pool C's first or second seed. In a scare incident in Saturday evening's game against Jacob Libbus, Kevin Marsh was attempting to sweep a hit and lost his balance falling to the ice and making contact with the travelling rock. McEwen trailing by one after Libbus stuck the blank attempt in the first, was looking at being forced in the second end with a double takeout to re-open the potential for a blank end.
As the end evolved, it appeared McEwen would settle for a shot for a single point. However, a Libbus miscue left McEwen with the open draw for a pair. McEwen stole two points in the third end, then one in the fourth end, and three more in the fifth end, for the 8-1 win. McEwen entered with a 7-1 over Edmonton's Zack Davies in their opening game, then won 6-1 over Steve Laycock of Swift Current, Saskatchewan and 7-1 over Brent Pierce of New Westminster, BC. Playoffs begin Monday at 9 am Mountain Time, with the championship final at 3:30 pm. |
