Epping on a roll in Swift Current

Toronto's John Epping (Photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) is 2-0 to start the 2022 IG Wealth Management Western Showdown.

Ontario's John Epping picked up two consecutive wins on Friday to start the IG Wealth Management Western Showdown in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. The Toronto-based rink is now just one win away from a spot in this weekend's playoffs.

Team Epping started the day with a dominant 10-1 victory against Saskatoon's Dallon Muyres in the first round of the triple knockout event. Epping's rink opened the draw with an impressive score of three in the first end, after which Muyres was forced to settle for just one in the second.

Epping would take control of the game in the third with a score of two, before going on to steal one in the fourth end and a remarkable four points in the fifth. Down 10-1 in the sixth end, the Muyers rink would go on to concede, handing Epping the victory.

The team from Ontario was back on the ice Friday afternoon for a second-round matchup against Saskatoon's Daymond Bernath. Like the morning Draw, Epping took control of the game early on, scoring two in the first end and stealing one in the second. A score of two in end number three would put Bernath's rink on the board, as they trailed 3-2.

Epping put up two more points in the fourth end to lead 5-2 heading into the break. Coming back in five, Bernath would opt for the blank, before conceding a steal of one in the sixth end. A steal of two more in the seventh would seal the victory for Team Epping, with the rink taking the win 8-2.

After two straight victories, Epping's team has secured a spot in Saturday's A-Side qualification draw, where they will face Sweden's Niklas Edin for a berth in the playoffs. Saturday morning's matchup will mark the first meeting this season between the two squads. In their career head-to-head record as skips, Edin currently leads the way with 17 victories to Epping's 10.

The loser of Saturday morning's contest will be relegated to the B-Side, where they will have two more chances to secure a playoff berth. Like Epping, Edin's rink secured a spot in the A-Side qualifier with two consecutive wins to start the tournament on Friday.

This weekend in Saskatchewan, Team Epping is looking for their first event win of the season. The rink's best performance so far was a third-place finish at the Curling Stadium Alberta Curling Series Major event in Leduc earlier this fall.

The 2022 IG Wealth Management Western Showdown runs through Sunday at the Swift Current Curling Club in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. 16 men's rinks are in action this weekend, with the winners set to take home $12,000.

Fans can watch live streams of every-single draw throughout the tournament, through Curling Stadium's exclusive coverage. Coverage can be found on the CurlingZone Youtube Page, with select draws also available through CBC Sports.
