Ottawa's Rachel Homan (photo: Anil Mungal, GSOC) finished 3-1 in the Grand Slam Tour Challenge Qualifying. By Frank Roch. It was a difficult end to an otherwise solid round-robin for Team Homan at the Tour Challenge slam event in Grand Prairie, Alberta, where they lost 9-5 to 2022 Olympic silver medalist Satsuki Fujisawa of Japan. Homan, throws the fourth stones with Tracy Fleury calling the game. Emma Miskew and Sarah Wilkes play on the front-end. Homan was 3-0 heading into the final round-robin game but met a determined Japanese team, who played well throughout, needing a win to have any hope of reaching the playoffs. Team Homan started the week with a more challenging than necessary 5-4 win over Team Gim of Korea. Homan was up 3-1 at the break in that game but needed a deuce in the 8th to secure the win after giving up singles in three consecutive ends. Team Homan followed with a solid 6-3 win over Team Jentsch and a convincing 7-3 win over Jennifer Jones, stealing four points in the second half of that game. It has been a good yet sometimes inconsistent start to the season for Team Homan, which is understandable given that Tracy Fleury is new to the team and the three other players are adapting to new roles. The season started well, reaching the final at the Saville Shootout, followed by a second-round exit at the PointsBet Invitational and a quarterfinal loss to Team Lawes at the first Grand Slam event of the season in North Bay. As Tracy Fleury said in a recent interview, her transition to the new team has gone well. Still, changes of this type always come with some uncertainty, especially since Tracy is working on tweaking her delivery to resemble the releases of the other three team members more closely. Homan plays Winnipeg's Kaitlyn Lawes, also 3-1 at 6pm ET (4pm MT). |
