Edin Perfect into the Playoffs at Grand Slam Tour Challenge

Sweden's Niklas Edin (photo: Stan Fong, Hardline) won 7-3 to finish 4-0 in round-robin play, knocking Bottcher to 0-4.

A strong start in a tournament for Niklas Edin, something they have struggled with in the past and a surprising result from Brendan Bottcher's Calgary team out of The Glencoe Club, as they go winless in Grande Prairie.

Bottcher started the game with hammer, getting their single point in the third end. Edin scored two in the fourth, and Bottcher replied back with two in the fifth end, to hold a 3-2 lead. Bottcher held Edin to a single in the sixth end, but steals of one in the sixth and three in the seventh were the downfall.

For Bottcher, the result is shocking when you consider the firepower on the team, though as we've seen so far this year the International teams are a bit ahead of the curve. For a new team like Bottcher, putting in team systems and finding success isn't always immediate, but this is a team that is building for the long haul.

Edin has spent that time together over several years with long term lineups and the chemistry that comes with it can be enough to get a team through these tough games.

Edin improved his record to 24-5 on the season, with his other wins coming over Marco Hoesli of Switzerland (8-3), Colton Flasch of Saskatoon (7-3), and Kevin Koe (3-1). Bottcher dropped an 8-4 decision to Steffen Walstad of Norway, then lost 7-4 to Yannick Schwaller of Switzerland and 6-5 to Italy's Joel Retornaz.

Edin will next play in the Quarterfinals on Saturday at Noon MT (2pm ET) and seen on Sportsnet's Around-the-Rings coverage.
