It was a two-win day for Manitoba's Team Beth Peterson on Thursday at the RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown at the Swift Current Curling Club, with the rink now into the third round of the A-Side after one day of competition. The Winnipeg-based team opened the tournament with a 7-5 victory over Saskatchewan's Ashley Howard on Thursday afternoon.

Peterson's rink- with third Jenna Loder, second Katherine Doerksen, and lead Melissa Gordan- would keep things close all draw, with the two teams tied 5-5 heading into the eighth end. The 2021 Scotties participant would capitalize on hammer in the final end of play, picking up a score of two to win 7-5.

Team Peterson had the rest of the afternoon off before facing South Korea's Eunjing Kim on Thursday night at 8:00 PM MT. The Peterson vs Kim matchup got underway with the Manitoba rink picking up two points in the first end. A score of three in the third end put Peterson up 5-1 early on in the game.

After Kim answered right in the fourth end with her own score of three, Peterson returned from the break in the fifth end with a score of two. The South Koreans responded in the sixth with two more points, to trail 7-5 with just two ends to go. Despite a valiant effort from Team Kim, Peterson was able to extend her lead in the seventh end with a score of two. A steal of three in the eighth end would seal the victory for Peterson, with the team from Winnipeg taking the win 12-6.

With their win on Thursday night, Team Peterson now sits at 2-0 to start the tournament in Swift Current. The young rink from Manitoba will take on Switzerland's Michele Jaeggi in an A-Side third-round matchup on Friday afternoon at 12:00 PM MT. The winner of Friday afternoon's draw will advance to an A-Side qualifier on Friday evening, with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.

Like Peterson, Jaeggi's rink is 2-0 to start the event, after picking up wins against Rhonda Varnes (7-0), and Darcy Robertson (8-6) on Thursday.

Team Peterson arrives in Swift Current as the 57th-ranked women's team in the world, according to the World Curling Federation's year-to-date rankings. So far this season, the rink has competed in just one other event, finishing in third place at the Mother Club Fall Curling Classic in September.

This weekend's event in Swift Current features a field of 32 women's rinks, with a large group of teams from Western Canada taking on a solid contingent of international opponents. Noteworthy Canadian teams include Sherry Anderson (SK), Corryn Brown (BC), Clancy Grandy (BC), and Amber Holland (SK).

Meanwhile, international teams like Italy's Stefania Constantini and Germany's Daniella Jentsch are looking to steal the victory on Canadian soil. 2022 World Champions Team Tirinzoni are also in the field this weekend, as the rink seeks its fourth event win of the season.
