Gushue, Edin to face off for BOOST National men's title

The old rivalry between Brad Gushue and Niklas Edin will continue as the two teams will face off Sunday for the BOOST National men's title. Both teams came out on top in their respective quarterfinal and semifinal matches to reach the event finale.

For the Gushue rink of Brad Gushue, Mark Nichols, E. J. Harnden, and Geoff Walker, it was relatively smooth sailing as the team never trailed in either of their matches. Heading into the playoffs as the second seeds, the team faced number seventh ranked Michael Brunner of Switzerland in the quarterfinals.

The St. John's based rink got off to a fast start with a count of three but were quickly matched by their Swiss counterparts who leveled the score after two. The teams then traded deuces in three and four, heading into the break at five all.

Coming back, the reigning Canadian champions seized control with a count of two in the fifth and an additional steal of two in the sixth. The Swiss team could only respond with one in seven, leading to early handshakes and a 9-6 victory for the NL squad.

In the semifinal, the team had no problems as they cruised to an 11-0 victory over the United States' Korey Dropkin. After scoring two in the first, the team swiped an early steal of four in the second to give themselves early control. They then stole a single in three and a pair of deuces in four and five to run away from the US team in a game where Gushue shot a perfect 100%.

For Team Edin, their quarterfinal game had a similar story as they went up against Saskatchewan's Colton Flasch. After exchanging singles in the first two ends, the team of Niklas Edin, Oskar Eriksson, Rasmus Wrana, and Christoffer Sundgren took two in the third and a single in the fourth to put themselves up 4-1. Then in the fifth, a missed draw by Colton Flasch gave the Swedes a steal of five, bringing the game to an early end.

The semifinals would prove to be a different tale as the Swedes faced Manitoba's Matt Dunstone. After an early deuce, the Dunstone rink blanked two ends before putting their first point on the board. Team Edin then blanked before taking a single of their own, giving them a 3-1 lead.

Following a fourth blank in seven, a clutch shot by Matt Dunstone on his first allowed him to make a soft weight hit to count two and send the game into an extra end. There, Niklas Edin navigated the port to make his final draw and win the game 4-3.

Heading into the final, Brad Gushue holds the all-time head-to-head record 22-12 over Niklas Edin in the thirty-four games played between the two skips. Despite this, Team Edin has won five of the last six meetings between the two rivaling squads.

Team Brad Gushue is the reigning champions of the BOOST National, defeating Bruce Mouat in the 2021 event final. He will be looking for his fourth event title and fourteenth Grand Slam title overall while Team Edin looks to secure their first ever BOOST National title and fourth Grand Slam overall.

The BOOST National men's final gets underway at 3:00 PM Eastern Time on Sportsnet and Sportsnet NOW from the North Bay Memorial Gardens in North Bay, Ontario.
