By: Cameron Sallaj In the first Sportsnet broadcast of the 2022-23 season, two heavy hitting teams in Sweden's Anna Hasselborg and Manitoba's Kaitlyn Lawes went to battle. Both teams sat level with 1-1 records in the sixteen-team qualifying round, making it a pivotal game for the two rinks. The Canadian rink of Kaitlyn Lawes, Selena Njegovan, Jocelyn Peterman, and Kristin MacCuish won the draw to the button thanks to a pinned shot by Njegovan. In the first end, facing one, Lawes opened the scoring with a delicate tap-back to count two for her Winnipeg based squad. In the second, a strong end by the Swedish rink gave Anna Hasselborg the opportunity to play another soft weight hit to put her team ahead 3-2, however, her stone didn't curl enough, only counting one. Lawes responded with a draw facing three in the third end to put her team ahead by two. After her miss in the second, Anna Hasselborg redeemed herself in the fourth end with a soft tap back shot to put two on the board for her Swedish side and level the score at three all. Into the second half, Team Lawes retook the lead with a draw for two to put themselves ahead 5-3. Then in the sixth, Hasselborg misfired on her final hit attempt facing three yellow Lawes counters, only chipping her intended target and spinning away. This resulted in a five-point lead for the Canadian team, a deficit which proved too big to come back from by the Swedes. Despite a deuce in the seventh end, Team Hasselborg couldn't come up with the three points necessary to tie the match in the eighth end. Team Lawes improved to 2-1 while Hasselborg dropped to 1-2. In other Draw 10 games from the National, Chelsea Carey kept her new Manitoba rink alive with an 8-7 victory over Team Daniela Jentsch of Germany. After an opening single, Carey was able to steal five in the second end and despite a strong comeback from the German side, the Winnipeg based team hung on for the win. Team Carey is now 1-2 and Team Jentsch slip to 0-3. The two Swiss rinks of Silvana Tirinzoni and Raphaela Keiser continued their strong play in this draw as well, both scoring their third wins of the event and qualifying for the playoff round. The world champions took three in the eighth end to escape South Korea's Team Eun-ji Gim 8-6 while Keiser doubled up on the United States' Tabitha Peterson. Both Gim and Peterson are now 1-2. The BOOST National continues all week long from the North Bay Memorial Gardens in North Bay, Ontario. The event is being broadcast throughout the weekend on Sportsnet channels and Sportsnet NOW.
