By: Dylan Chenier Three-time Scotties champion Rachel Homan, and 2021 Canadian Olympic trials runner-up Tracy Fleury have announced they are teaming up for the next Olympic quadrennial. "I can't tell you how excited I am for Tracy to join our team," said Homan.
"We have battled on the ice for years, and I have always respected her game. She's an absolute competitor and to have Tracy join us brings even more experience to our team. I can't wait to compete with Tracy and the team next season." Homan and Fleury are teaming up at a time in which the two skips have experienced mixed results over the past season. Following a Scotties and Olympic trials title in the previous cycle, the 2018-22 stretch saw Homan's rink enjoy very few championship successes. After coming up short in three-consecutive Scotties finals, Team Homan suffered a disappointing last-place finish at the 2021 Tim Hortons Curling Trials, missing out on a chance to defend their title for 2017. On the other hand, Tracy Fleury will be entering into the new arrangement following one of the most successful seasons of her career. After making the finals at two-consecutive Grand Slam, including a victory at the 2021 GSOC Masters, Fleury's team went undefeated throughout the round-robin at the Trials in Saskatoon. Unfortunately, Fleury's team would falter in the Trails final, losing to Jennifer Jones 6-5 in extra ends at the SaskTel Centre, With today's announcement, the rink is now poised to be one of the most dominant teams in Canadian women's curling. It also marks another new configuration for the next cycle, as teams change lineups in the hopes of winning the next Olympic trials. Fleury will join the Ottawa-based rink as its import player, with the rest of the squad having been born in Ontario. Today's news also marks an adjustment for one of curling's longest-standing thirds. Former Homan vice-skip Emma Miskew will be moving down to play in the front end, joining former second Sarah Wilkes. Meanwhile, Homan and Fleury will take care of the back-end responsibilities. The team has said that they will sort out specific lineup elements over the coming weeks, which includes deciding who will play skip. In the meantime, Homan and Fleury will finish out the current season with their respective teams, which resumes with the Players' Championship in April. |
