Jacobs Wins Opening Draw at Trials

Northern Ontario's Brad Jacobs (Photo: Curling Canada) got things off to a strong start at this year's Tim Hortons Curling Trials, defeating Ontario's John Epping 9-3 in the opening draw.

By: Dylan Chenier

Things got off to a slow start on Saturday evening, with Jacobs' rink blanking the first three ends. In the fourth, Jacobs finally opened up the scoring, taking two.

After forcing Epping to a single in the fifth, Jacobs really opened things up in the sixth end, scoring an impressive four points.

Epping tried to keep the game competitive, scoring two in the seventh end. However, Jacobs would go on to score three more in the eighth, putting the game out of reach, leading to handshakes.

For Team Jacobs, the percentages were quite impressive throughout the game, with the entire team curling a cumulative average of 92%. Third Marc Kennedy led the way, curling a remarkable 100%, compared to Epping's Third Ryan Fry who curled 81%. As skip, Jacobs would record a 97%, while Epping finished at 88%.

Brad Jacobs will be hoping to build on the success of the 2013 Trials event in Winnipeg, which saw his rink finish with an 8-0 record, en-route to an Olympic gold medal.

Jacobs's rink, with second E.J. Harnden and lead Ryan Harnden, will hope to keep the momentum going as the team gets ready to face the hometown rink, Matt Dunstone (0-1), on Sunday afternoon.

Jacobs and Dunstone have met twice so far this season having won the two games by a combined score of 12-7.

For Team Epping, the defeat on Saturday marks one less game the team can afford to lose in the future. In order to make the playoffs, the team likely needs a winning record.

Up next for the Ontario foursome will be an afternoon meeting with Manitoba's Jason Gunnlaugson. The Gunnlaugson rink sat out Saturday night's draw and will look to be getting caught up to speed as the work progresses.

Other results from draw one saw Kevin Koe beat Ontario's Team Horgan 9-2 in nine ends, Brad Gushue defeated Team Bottcher 6-4, and McEwen defeated Saskatchwen's Team Dunstone 7-2.

The 2021 Tim Hortons Curling Trials continue through November 28, with the men's final set for 7:00 PM CT.
