Matt Dunstone got their 2021 BOOST National campaign underway Friday evening, picking up a big win against Calgary's Kevin Koe. By: Dylan Chenier With Tyler Tardi filling in at third this week, the Saskatchewan rink got by Team Koe 8-7 in a thrilling first-round matchup. Filling out Dunstone's roster is Kirk Muyres at second and Dustin Kidby at lead. Dunstone started the draw with hammer, scoring three in the first end. In the second end, Koe picked up a score of two, then scored two more in the third end. A single point by Dunstone in the fourth tied things up at four apiece going into the break. In the fifth, Koe scored another double, taking a 6-4 lead. In the sixth and seventh ends, the teams took turns scoring singles, with Koe leading 7-5 with just one end to play. In the eighth end, Dunstone picked up a huge three score, taking the win 8-7. Despite winning the draw, Dunstone's rink was outcurled by their opponent, with Team Koe curling a collective 89% compared to Dunstone's 78%. The strongest performance for Dunstone's squad came from super-spare Tyler Tardi, who curled 86%. The win puts Dunstone within three of Kevin Koe in the two skip's all-time head-to-head record. The Manitoba-born skip has now won his last three consecutive matchups against Koe, including a nail-biting 4-3 victory at last month's IG Wealth Management Western Showdown in Swift Current. Koe leads the series 9-6. With their victory on Tuesday, Team Dunstone is now through to the second round of the A-side in the men's triple knockout format. Next up, the team will face off against Brad Gushue's Newfoundland squad after defeating Jason Gunnlaugson (MB) 5-4 on Tuesday morning. Gushue holds a 7-5 lead over Dunstone in the twelve total matchups between the two skips. In their most recent matchup, a clash at the 2021 Player's Championship, it was Dunstone emerging with a 7-2 win. Dunstone's rink needs just two more wins to qualify for the playoffs at the BOOST National. In 2019, the rink's only other appearance in the event, Team Dunstone finished with a 1-3 record and failed to advance to the quarter-finals. The 2021 BOOST National marks the second stop on the 2021-22 Pinty's Grand Slam of Curling Season. In their last outing, the 2021 Masters, Dunstone's rink went 1-3 and were eliminated after an 8-6 loss to De Cruz (SUI) in the second round of the C-Side. Score and Brackets at www.curlingzone.com. |
