Brad Jacobs (Photo: Anil Mungal) enters this year's running of the BOOST National as the event's defending champions. By: Dylan Chenier The last edition of the National, held in 2019, saw Jacobs' rink go 6-1 through the tournament, en-route to the championship. In the finals, Jacobs' Northern Ontario rink met Sweden's Nicklas Edin, where they took a 3-1 victory. This year the event heads to Chestermere, Alberta, for its twentieth running. Jacobs rink has won the National two times, with their other victory coming back in 2016. Team Jacobs, with third Marc Kennedy, second E.J. Harden, and lead Ryan Harden, began their defence quest on Tuesday morning with a draw against Manitoba's Braden Calvert. In their six previous matchups, Jacobs has dominated, holding a 6-0 record. Their most recent clash came back in 2019 at the Shorty Jenkins Classic, which Jacobs won 9-5. So far this season, Team Jacobs has played four events, all of which have made the final. At their most recent stop on tour, Jacobs rink fell to Scotland's Bruce Mouat 5-7 in the championship final at the GSOC Masters in Oakville. This weekend's event will once again see 16 of the best men's rinks competing in a triple knockout format. The winners look to take home $35,000, 12 Pinty's Cup points, and a spot in the 2022 KIOTI Champions Cup. The 2021 National will also provide a great opportunity for the Canadian rinks in contention this weekend, as the event marks the final major tour stop ahead of the Tim Horton's Curling Trials, which are set for November 20-28 in Saskatoon. Team Jacobs is looking to be in top form heading into this year's trials, as they hope to qualify for the second Winter Olympics in 8 years. With their current record, Jacobs is likely to be a threat all weekend and will be tough to beat as they seek out their first Grand Slam title of the season. The 2021 BOOST National runs November 2-7, 2021 at the Chestermere Recreation Centre in Chestermere, Alberta. Fans can track live scores and standings at www.curlingzone.com. |
