Chelsea Carey Debuts Saskatchewan-based Team at Saville Shoot-out

EDMONTON - Two-time Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion Chelsea Carey (photo: Anil Mungal) doesn't hide it. It's in her blood.

By Price Atkinson

When you're born and raised in Winnipeg, you naturally grow up a Bombers fan. Even spending the last six years living in Calgary, she didn't lose her Bomber fandom in lieu of adopting her new "hometown" Calgary Stampeders.

"I can't hide it. I'm a Bombers fan," Carey said.

So how well does Carey's Bombers fandom fit in with her new curling rink out of passionate Saskatchewan, home to the CFL's most rabid and diehard Roughrider fans?

"I think once she sees how amazing Saskatchewan fans are, she might reconsider," Erickson said with a wink.

Her new teammates are all based out of Saskatchewan and wear their Rider pride decked out in green on game days, including last weekend when the two rivals matched up on Labour Day weekend in Regina. The Bombers walked out of Mosaic Stadium with a 23-8 win and Carey rolled up a big Bombers smile on social media (see the team's Instagram post).

"I still haven't heard from them about the game," Carey added. "It means they aren't happy with the outcome."

The football rivalry will be behind the "new" Team Carey this weekend when her five-person crew strolls into Edmonton this weekend for the Alberta Curling Series' Saville Shoot-Out. It will be their first event of the season and first bonspiel together as a team.

In the very short 2020-21 season, Carey linked up as a fill-in replacement for Team Tracy Fleury and their skip who opted out of the Calgary bubble except for one event. Carey happily filled in, skipping the Team Fleury in the Scotties and one Grand Slam of Curling event.

But wanting to get back to the game full-time, Carey was approached by Saskatchewan's Jennifer Armstrong, Jolene Campbell, Stephanie Schmidt and Erickson. The catch? She'd be their out-of-province player.

Carey is excited about her new rink, playing on a five-person team for the first time in her decorated career.

"We're excited and think this has a lot of potential," she said. "We haven't had a lot of prep time in the offseason. I think we're ready to see what we've got and then just a make the adjustments on the fly."

Even though they've only had one practice weekend together, Erickson said it's been a nice fit.

"Getting our team together and planning a season was a bit of a whirlwind with all the unknowns," Erickson said. "But I couldn't believe how natural it felt to all be together. Our hours on FaceTime definitely paid off!"

Carey will take her natural position, skipping the team this weekend in Edmonton, while the other four players will likely rotate between the other three spots in the lineup. This will be a new experience for all five starting Friday when they open with Brett Barber's fellow Saskatchewan rink at 10:00 am (MT).

"We don't know exactly how it's going to go because none of us have ever done a five-person team," she said. "We'll go with what makes sense. Early on we're going to get everybody on the ice and then get a game plan together moving forward."

While positions are still left to be fully ironed out, Erickson will be the rink's "flex" player. She's played up and down the lineup at all four spots over the last several seasons.

"I think my experience in different positions will be a huge asset to our team," Erickson said. "I think my past will not only benefit me on the performance and shot-making side of things, but also understanding my roles and responsibilities as a teammate. It's a big change, but I'm excited for the challenge."

Bummed about being left out of the Pre-Trials without an avenue to compete for a spot in the upcoming 2022 Olympic Winter Games, Carey's team a few goals in mind for their first season together.

"I think the Scotties is our main goal because we don't have access to other things like the Trials. We'd love to make a Slam or two at the end of the season if it works out that way. But we're going to play the schedule that makes the most sense for us and hopefully we'll peak in January."

The 20-team Saville Shoot-Out gets started Friday morning and continues through Monday with the championship final set for 4:00 p.m. (MT). Follow live scoring all weekend at www.CurlingZone.com.
