Adams claims New Brunswick women's title

Team Melissa Adams (Photo: Curling NB) successfully defended their title at the NB Women's provincials and will head to the Scotties for a second consecutive year.

By: Cameron Sallaj

At the 2025 New Brunswick Women's Curling Championship, which took place January 15 to 18 in St. Andrews, Melissa Adams dominated the rest of the field to send her team to their second consecutive Canadian women's championship.

With third Jaclyn Crandall, second Kayla Russell, lead Kendra Lister, alternate Molli Ward and coach Alex Robichaud, the team, representing the Capital Winter Club in Fredericton, won all three qualifying events. They beat Sylvie Quillian (Moncton) in the A and B rounds before defeating Justine Comeau in the C final, cancelling the scheduled playoff.

It was a second straight title for Team Adams who also won the 2024 championship and went on to a 2-6 record at the national championship in Calgary. The win marks a fourth New Brunswick provincial women's title for skip Melissa Adams, a third for lead Kendra Lister and a second for the rest of the team.

Team Adams began the event with a stolen 8-6 win over Sarah Gaines (Oromocto) before overcoming an early 5-1 deficit to beat Sarah Mallais (Moncton) 10-7 in Draw 2. This qualified them for the A event final where they defeated Sylvie Quillian, the top ranked team coming into the event, 10-6.

Despite already qualifying for the playoff round, the Adams rink continued to play with the chance to also win both the B and C events. In Draw 5, the team took two in the tenth end to steal another 8-6 win from Justine Comeau before stealing the last two ends of Draw 6 to defeat Team Quillian by the same score. Now with the A and B events locked up, the team only needed two more wins to secure the title.

In Draw 7, the team stole two in the fourth end to lead Team Mallais 4-1 and held on for a 7-5 win. They then faced Justine Comeau in the C event final where after missing a shot for the win in the tenth end, the team counted two in an extra end for the 8-6 win and the championship crown.

The 2024 national championship will be held from February 14 to 23 at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Northern Ontario. There will be eighteen teams in the field all competing for the national title. The winning rink will represent Canada at the 2025 World Women's Curling Championship at the Uijeongbu Indoor Ice Rink in Uijeongbu, South Korea from March 15 to 23.
