Dunstone Reaches Astec Safety Challenge Semis
Winnipeg's Matt Dunstone continues undefeated, winning 6-5 over Scotland's Ross Whyte in Friday's quarterfinals. Dunstone, with Colton Lott at third and brothers E.J and Ryan Harnden made easy work through the preliminary round at the Astec Safety Challenge. Dunstone opened action on Wednesday against Johnson Tao and the University of Alberta Golden Bears, winning 6-3 in a tightly contested match that saw Dunstone score two in the eighth end to seal the win. From there, life got easy for Dunstone, taking an 8-0 decision over Italy's Joel Retornaz, and finishing out the A-event conquest with an 8-1 decision over Switzerland's Yannick Schwaller. Dominant wins over two highly regarded opponents, Retornaz ranked #5 and Schwaller, #2 on the World Curling Team Rankings. Dunstone opened the game against Whyte with hammer, the result of their qualifying position in the event, using the advantage to blank the first two ends. Dunstone scored two in the third end, then stole another point in the fourth end to hold a 3-0 lead at the game's halfway point. Whyte wasn't giving up, scoring three points in the fifth end, with the teams trading deuces in the sixth and seventh ends to set up the final end. Dunstone took hammer into the eighth end tied at 5, using the last rock to score a single point for the win. Dunstone lines up against Sweden's Niklas Edin in Saturday semifinals, going at 10am Mountain Time. The Final goes later in the day at 2pm. Dunstone vs. Schwaller - A-Qualifier . |
