Gushue Into Astec Safety Challenge Playoffs
Brad Gushue (St. John's, NL) won 13-6 over Scotland's Ross Whyte to advance to Friday's Quaterfinals in Lloydminster. Gushue, with Mark Nichols, Brendan Bottcher and Geoff Walker started off 2025 with a bang, winning all three preliminary round game to open the calendar. The scoreboard not indicative of the game in general as Whyte challenged Gushue into the late end, the last four points posted in the eighth end after a hail-mary attempt. Gushue did however hold control for most of the game, opening with two points in the first end, then stealing two more in the second end. Whyte bounced back in the third end with three points, though Gushue got three in the fourth to restore the four point lead. Whyte scored two in the fifth end, then stole another point in the sixth end to cut the deficit to a single point. Gushue scored two in the seventh end to take a 9-6 lead into the final end. Gushue won 5-4 over Swift Current's Carl deConinck Smith in their opening game, then winning 8-5 over Scott Howard of Navan, Ontario. Gushue next plays at 8pm Mountain Time in the quarterfinals, their opponenet yet to be determined. With World #1 ranked Bruce Mouat taking the lowest seeded winner from the C-Qualifiers, Gushue is set to face the highest seeded winner from Friday afternoon's C-Qualifiers.
