Tirinzoni defeats Kitazawa for Karuizawa International playoff spot
Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni (Photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) are into Sunday's four team playoff round. By: Cameron Sallaj European champions Team Silvana Tirinzoni are back into the knockout round after unexpectedly missing the playoffs at the last Grand Slam of the year in St. John's. The team, with Alina Patz, Carole Howald and Selina Witschonke sat 1-1 after two games in Japan and needed a win to advance. Playing Ikue Kitazawa of Nagano, the Swiss blanked the first end before nosing a blank attempt in the second, settling for one. They then forced the Japanese to just one in the third, tying the score at one. A single for Tirinzoni in four was replicated by Kitazawa in six to again have a tied game. In seven, the four-time world champions scored the first and only multi-point end of the game with a hit for three, eventually running Kitazawa out of rocks in eight for a 5-2 win. Karuizawa International - Draw 5 - Silvana Tirinzoni vs Ikue Kitazawa: Tirinzoni finished the round robin ranked second in their pool with a 2-1 record. They will now cross over and face Sayaka Yoshimura, the winner of Pool B, in the semifinals. The other game will see Miyu Ueno go against Anna Hasselborg to determine the 2024 finalists. On the men's side, Shinya Abe and Riku Yanagisawa will square off in an all-Japanese affair while Marc Muskatewitz and Michael Brunner will play to determine the second finalist. Both Joel Retornaz and Niklas Edin were eliminated after finishing 1-2 in the preliminary round. One game per draw is being streamed on the Karuizawa International YouTube channel.
