Carruthers downs Purcell to open Western Showdown
Winnipeg's Reid Carruthers (Photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) doubled up on Halifax's Owen Purcell in his first game in Swift Current. By: Cameron Sallaj With new second Kyle Doering in the lineup, Team Carruthers are off to a winning start at the RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. After having a bye in the opening draw, the team took on Halifax's Owen Purcell in Friday's Draw 7. Starting with the hammer, Carruthers, backed up by Doering, Catlin Schneider and Connor Njegovan gave up a steal of one to open the match. They then blanked the second end before tacking two on the board in three for their first score. Already sitting one in four, Purcell and his Nova Scotia squad of Luke Saunders, Scott Saccary and Ryan Abraham drew for two of their own to go back ahead 3-2 heading into the second half. Coming back in five, Carruthers capitalized on a crucial flash by Purcell, drawing the rings for a big three points. In six, the Nova Scotians were only able to respond with one, allowing Carruthers to lead by one with hammer into seven. After being forced to take a single in the seventh, the reigning Manitoba champions forced Owen Purcell into an angle runback triple to force the game into overtime, which he did not make. Carruthers stole two from the end with the final score going down as 8-4. RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown - Draw 7 - Reid Carruthers vs Owen Purcell: In November, the Carruthers rink parted ways with second Derek Samagalski who stepped away from competitive curling to focus on family. This left an open spot which was filled by Manitoba native Kyle Doering. Initially beginning the season on Team Aaron Sluchinski, Doering was left as a free agent following the dissolution of the team when Sluchinski joined Kevin Koe. With the win, Carruthers moves into the A semifinals where he will take on provincial rival Matt Dunstone Saturday at 11:15 AM CT. Dunstone was also a winner in Draw 7, defeating Drew Heidt (Kerrobert, SK) 5-3. Purcell is now in the B bracket and will take on Ethan Sampson (Chaska, MN) Friday night at 9:00 PM CT.
