Muskatewitz continues winning momentum in Japan
Germany's Marc Muskatewitz (Photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) defeated Riku Yanagisawa in their opening game in Karuizawa. By: Cameron Sallaj The German men's team have not slowed down since winning the European championships last month. After reaching the quarterfinals at their debut Grand Slam in Newfoundland, the team is now in Japan, competing in the Karuizawa International to close out 2024. The team, comprised of Marc Muskatewitz, Benjamin Kapp, Felix Messenzehl, Johannes Scheuerl and Mario Trevisiol began their campaign in Karuizawa against Riku Yanagisawa, the reigning silver medalists in the country. After giving up two to start the game, the Germans tied the score with a deuce of their own in the second end. The two rinks then traded singles through the next two ends to sit tied at halftime. Coming back in five, the Japanese were forced to just one before Muskatewitz put four on the board in six to take a 7-4 lead. The team then stole three more in seven to end the game early, 10-4 the final score. After finishing fifth at the world championship last year in Switzerland, Team Muskatewitz have been on a steady climb to the top, now ranking inside the top ten for the first time. This season, they only missed the playoffs one time in their ten events played and currently sit sixth on the YTD rankings. In Saturday's action, the European champions will play Takumi Maeda of Kitami before closing out the round robin against Sweden's Niklas Edin. The top two teams in each pool will qualify for Sunday's playoff round. One game per draw is being streamed on the Karuizawa International YouTube channel.
