Lawes Wins Opener in Swift Current
Winnipeg's Kaitlyn Lawes (photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) defeated Regina's Jolene Campbell 9-2 in their RBC Securities Western Showdown opening game. By Connor Simms, Kaitlyn Lawes, with Selena Njegovan at third, Jocelyn Peterman and Kristin MacCuish on the front end, continues to look for their first championship game of the season. The #16 Year-to-Date (YTD) ranked team has had multiple semi-final finishes throughout the season but has yet to make a final. They opened up the RBC Securities Western Showdown versus Jolene Campbell, winning the opening draw to the button for the hammer. Lawes opened the first end, playing a lightweight hit a stick around a top 12 stone for a deuce. Campbell responded with a deuce of her own, making an angle slash onto Lawes' stone on the button. Lawes was forced to her single in the third end after drawing to the four-foot against two. Lawes broke open the game by stealing four points after Campbell missed a draw to the four-foot. Lawes continued the pressure on Campbell, adding another steal, forcing Campbell into a tough 12-foot double runback against two. This resulted in handshakes and a 9-2 victory for Lawes. Lawes will face the winner of Calgary's Kayla Skrlik and Saskatoon's Ashley Thevenot on Thursday at 4:00 pm Central Time (CT). The triple knockout action will continue through Saturday evening, with the playoffs happening all day Sunday.
