By Connor Simms, Winnipeg Beach's Kadriana and Colton Lott remain strong contenders for the Olympic trials in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, at the end of December. The defending Canadian champions booked their ticket to the trials because they finished in the top three of last year's Canadian Mixed Doubles national in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The winner of this event will also grab a spot in the Mixed Doubles Curling Trials. However, if a team wins the event already qualified, the spot will be given to the next highest-placed team in this event. The last eight spots for the 16-team event will be determined by the top eight teams in the Canadian Mixed Doubles rankings that have not yet qualified. They faced Laura Walker and Kirk Muyres (Edmonton, Humboldt) on Sunday morning's quarterfinal action. Walker/Muyres started with the hammer because they qualified through the A-side. Walker/Muyres opened the game with a deuce, adding a steal of one in the second. Lott/Lott responded by getting three points in the third. Walker/Muyres grabbed another deuce in the fourth. Lott/Lott found another three points in the fifth, taking their first lead. Walker/Muyres could not find offence in their powerplay, giving up a steal of four and a 10-5 victory for Lott/Lott. Lott/Lott finished 4-2 in the 32-team qualifying round. In their opening game, Lott/Lott defeated Sherry Just/Kyle Cherpin (Prince Albert) 7-5, then won 8-1 against Brittany Tran/Rylan Kleiter (Calgary). Lott/Lott lost 7-4 against Jones/Laing. Lott/Lott lost 6-5 to Adams/Robichaud (Moncton) where Lott/Lott responded with a 8-4 win over Zoe Cinnamon/Johnson Tao (Edmonton). Lott/Lott won 8-1 against Marlee Powers/Luke Saunders (Halifax) in their final qualifying round match. In the round of 12, Lott/Lott defeated Kira Brunton/ Jake Horgan (Sudbury) 6-5. This is Lott/Lott's second mixed doubles event of the season. They won their first one back in August at the Enns Bros Mixed Doubles Classic. They will face Jennifer Jones/Brent Laing (Barrie) in the semi-finals at 12:30 am Central Time (CT). The other semi-final will be between Peterman/Gallant (Chestermere) and Armstrong/Griffith (Kelowna). The finals will take place at 4:00 pm CT today. |
