Homan/Bottcher slides into the quarterfinals
Edmonton's Rachel Homan and Brendan Bottcher look to add 3rd event win of their season after grabbing a quarterfinal spot by defeating Calgary's Kayla Skrlik and Jeremy Harty 4-2 at the Rocky Mountain Classic. By Connor Simms, Rachel Homan and Brendan Bottcher (Edmonton) continue to prove themselves strong contenders for the Liverpool, NS Olympic Trials at the end of December. Homan/Bottcher, a new team this season, needed to win one of the three qualifier events to secure their spot. Winning the second mixed doubles qualifier in Guelph, Ontario, back in November meant that they did not have to rely on the Canadian Mixed Doubles Rankings (CMDR) to grab one of the last eight spots. The winner of this event will also grab a spot in the Mixed Doubles Curling Trials. However, if a team wins the event already qualified, the spot will be given to the next highest-placed team in this event. They took on Kayla Skrlik and Jeremy Harty (Calgary) in Saturday evening round of 12 action, winning the opening draw to the button for the hammer. Homan/Bottcher opened the scoring with a deuce, adding a steal of one in the second. Skrlik/Harty responded with a deuce and a steal in the fourth. Homan/Bottcher added a single in the fifth, adding one more stealing in the sixth. Skrlik/Harty tied the game with two in the seventh. Homan/Bottcher responded with two more in the last end to win the match 7-5. Homan/Bottcher finished 4-2 in the 32-team qualifying round. In their opening game, Homan/Bottcher defeated Brett Barber/Mitch Heidt (Kerrobert) 5-4, then lost 7-6 against Jennifer Jones/Brent Laing. Homan/Bottcher responded with an 8-1 win over Selena Sturmay/Kyler Kleibrink (Calgary). Homan/Bottcher lost 8-2 against Peterman/Gallant(Chestermere). Homan/Bottcher responded with a 7-2 victory over Cheryl Damen/Tyler Van Amsterdam (Edmonton). Homan/Bottcher won 7-4 against Julianna Mackenzie/Sterling Middleton (Vernon) in their final qualifying round match. They are set to rematch Peterman/Gallant in the quarterfinals on Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. Mountain Time (MT). All the action will continue through Sunday, with the semi-finals at 11:30 a.m. MT and the finals at 3:00 p.m. MT. |
